Experiments in Molecular Physics with an Acoustic Interferometer

American Journal of Physics, 1973
An acoustic interferometer provides an inexpensive means for making precise studies of the kinetics of gas molecules. Two experiments are described: (1) Measurement of the vibrational relaxation time of gas molecules and (2) determination of intermolecular (van der Waals) forces in molecules.

Molecular acoustics. Part 4.—Volume change between conformational isomers

Trans. Faraday Soc., 1970
By comparing ultrasonic with n.m.r. and equilibration data on conformational equilibria it has been shown that the conformers present in each of the substances 1,1,2-tribromoethane, meso-2,3-dibromobutane and 4-methyl-1,3-dioxan differ in volume by 1–3 %. This result is also consistent with density data on some cyclic compounds.

Acoustic determination of polymer molecular weights and rotation times

Journal of Polymer Science Part B: Polymer Physics, 2002
AbstractAn acoustic waveguide device was shown to be sensitive to the molecular weight of poly(ethylene glycol) in solution over a molecular weight range determined by the operating frequency of the device. The acoustic device used generates a shear wave with displacement in the plane of the device surface and normal to the direction of propagation ...

Acoustic fingerprints of photoacoustic contrast agents for molecular imaging

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
Protein nanospheres capable of frequency controlled oscillation in response to laser stimulation are presented as contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging. Incident laser energy absorbed by dye-labeled protein nanospheres causes thermoelastically generated sound production.

Acoustic Biosensors for Noninvasive Imaging of Molecular Processes

Understanding biology in its native context has been a major scientific endeavor. Yet, it is challenging to visualize cellular dynamics at the molecular scale in the context of a living organism at the macroscopic scale. Ultrasound imaging represents a promising candidate to address this challenge, with its unique advantages of large imaging volume ...
