Proteasome assembly chaperone translation upon stress requires Ede1 phase separation at the plasma membrane

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Proteome adaptation is key to cells surviving stresses. Increased translation of proteasome assembly chaperones (PACs) is critical for increasing proteasome assembly and cell degradative capacity.

Molecular biology, a widely used expression for a changeable meaning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The present article is the on-line equivalent of Preprint 310 of the Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte (Berlin) and has been contributed as an oral communication in September 2005.On my side, I believe that I first encountered the ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

The challenges of purely mechanistic models in biology and the minimum need for a 'mechanism-plus-X' framework [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Ever since the advent of molecular biology in the 1970s, mechanical models have become the dogma in the field, where a "true" understanding of any subject is equated to a mechanistic description. This has been to the detriment of the biomedical sciences,

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Cardiac fibrosis inhibitor CTPR390 prevents structural and morphological changes in human engineered cardiac connective tissue

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Cardiac fibrosis is a key characteristic of heart failure. CTPR390, an experimental anti-fibrotic inhibitor targeting Hsp90, has shown success in animal models, but remains unexplored in human cardiac models.

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...
