Systems biology versus molecular biology [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2004
Molecular biology and systems biology provide answers to the same questions, but the answers are quite different for the two approaches and are, on the surface, unrelated. The molecular biological answers are arguably more fundamental and are unique, but alternative systems biology answers are possible – consider the two systems-level answers to the ...

The solution supramolecular structure of α2 → 8 polysialic acid suggests a structural cause for its low immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
α2 → 8 polysialic acid elicits poor immunogenicity. Small‐angle scattering shows a supramolecular structure with parallel‐chain binding, although in different forms at μm and mm calcium. The major histocompatibility complex requires molecular weights around 2000 Da to produce antibodies, and 2000 Da polysialic oligomers will bind in these structures ...

Protein quality control machinery supports primary ciliogenesis by eliminating GDP-bound Rab8-family GTPases

open access: yesiScience, 2023
Summary: The small GTPase Rab8 plays a vital role in the vesicular trafficking of cargo proteins from the trans-Golgi network to target membranes. Upon reaching its target destination, Rab8 is released from the vesicular membrane into the cytoplasm via ...

When physics meets biology: a less known Feynman [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
We discuss a less known aspect of Feynman's multifaceted scientific work, centered about his interest in molecular biology, which came out around 1959 and lasted for several years. After a quick historical reconstruction about the birth of molecular biology, we focus on Feynman's work on genetics with Robert S.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Histidine-Rich Glycoprotein Inhibits High-Mobility Group Box-1-Mediated Pathways in Vascular Endothelial Cells through CLEC-1A

open access: yesiScience, 2020
Summary: High-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) protein has been postulated to play a pathogenic role in severe sepsis. Histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG), a 75 kDa plasma protein, was demonstrated to improve the survival rate of septic mice through the ...

A metal ion-dependent mechanism of RAD51 nucleoprotein filament disassembly

open access: yesiScience, 2023
Summary: The RAD51 ATPase polymerizes on single-stranded DNA to form nucleoprotein filaments (NPFs) that are critical intermediates in the reaction of homologous recombination.

Molecular Cloud Biology [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Some astrobiological models suggest that molecular clouds may serve as habitats for extraterrestrial life. This study reviews recent theoretical work addressing the physical and biochemical prerequisites for life in such environments, with particular focus on three subjects: (1) bioenergetic pathways under extreme low-temperature conditions; (2) the ...

Synthetic Biology in Leishmaniasis: Design, simulation and validation of constructed Genetic circuit [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
Building circuits and studying their behavior in cells is a major goal of systems and synthetic biology. Synthetic biology enables the precise control of cellular states for systems studies, the discovery of novel parts, control strategies, and interactions for the design of robust synthetic systems. To the best of our knowledge, there are no literature
