An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Treatment response assessment with (R)-[11CPAQ PET in the MMTV-PyMT mouse model of breast cancer

open access: yesEJNMMI Research, 2018
Background The goal of the study was to assess the potential of the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR)-2-targeting carbon-11 labeled (R)-N-(4-bromo-2-fluorophenyl)-6-methoxy-7-((1-methyl-3-piperidinyl)methoxy)-4-quinazolineamine ((R ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The intriguing occurrence of Acute Myeloid Leukemia in a case of Acute Lymphoblastic leukemia:Report of two cases

open access: yesJournal of Applied Hematology, 2020
The aim of this study is to study the two cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who relapsed as acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Presented here are reports of two cases of pediatric ALL who developed change of lineage to AML at relapse. This change in

Genomic studies of the coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) : [Abstract P0225] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The evolutionary history of the monotypic coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is intriguing and its geographical origin remains unknown. The coconut is the quintessential strand plant, colonizing sandy coastal beaches and islands in the humid tropics and is well

Macromolecular crowding explains overflow metabolism in cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Overflow metabolism is a metabolic phenotype of cells characterized by mixed oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) and fermentative glycolysis in the presence of oxygen.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Clinical expression of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy in carriers of 1-3 D4Z4 reduced alleles: Experience of the FSHD Italian National Registry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
OBJECTIVES: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy type 1 (FSHD1) has been genetically linked to reduced numbers ( 64 8) of D4Z4 repeats at 4q35. Particularly severe FSHD cases, characterised by an infantile onset and presence of additional extra ...

Molecular Basis of KELnull Phenotype in Brazilians [PDF]

open access: yesTransfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy, 2014
Background: KELnull (K₀) persons can produce clinically significant anti-KEL5 antibody after transfusion and/or pregnancy, requiring K₀ blood transfusion when indicated. 37 K₀ alleles have been reported in studies over different populations, but none in Amerindian-Caucasian descendants

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
