Ecological causes and consequences of the formation of taxa with reduced adaptive potential as exemplified by freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera)

open access: yesTransactions of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2016
Freshwater pearl mussels live in rapid, cold rivers and streams, occupying the ecological niche that few of other bivalves fit. Therefore, these mussels are abundant in undisturbed habitats, and there is practically no struggle for existence in their ...

Spatial distribution in marine invertebrates in rocky shore of Araucania Region (38° S, Chile) [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2019
The rocky shores in Chile have a wide invertebrate species diversity, that include species with marked abundances in determined regions. The aim of the present study is to analyse the spatial distribution pattern in different marine invertebrate species ...

FAUNA AND DISTRIBUTION OF GASTROPOD AND BIVALVE MOLLUSKS (MOLLUSCA: GASTROPODA, BIVALVIA) IN THE LITTORAL ZONE OF THE FAR EAST MARINE BIOSPHERE RESERVE (PETER THE GREAT BAY, SEA OF JAPAN)

open access: yesЮг России: экология, развитие, 2019
Aim. The littoral fauna of the Far East Marine Reserve was studied at the end of the last century; however, the monitoring studies of the malacofauna are relevant because of the increased recreational load and the threat of new species introduction.

Spatially Tailorable Liquid Crystalline Elastomer Alignment During Digital Light Process 3D Printing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we report the fabrication of 3D printable liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) structures with spatially tailorable alignment domains within the same layer. This work addresses the long‐standing challenge of preparing complex 3D LCE architectures with patterned functional domains to achieve nonlinear deformations. Fabrication of multi‐domains in 3D

Growth, Hematobiochemical Changes, and Gut Bactericidal Potential of Atama, Heinsia crinita, Leaf Extract–Based Diet on Nile Tilapia

open access: yesScientifica
Feed additives are essential for economic sustainability in aquaculture. However, the use of synthetic chemical additives in fish culture can lead to antibiotic resistance, reduced drug potency, and decreased profitability.

60 specific eDNA qPCR assays to detect invasive, threatened, and exploited freshwater vertebrates and invertebrates in Eastern Canada

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, 2020
Practical applications of environmental DNA (eDNA) are in exponential expansion, especially for the assessment and monitoring of freshwater metazoans. Because eDNA sampling and analysis is noninvasive, it improves the detection of threatened, invasive ...

Prenucleation Species Dictate Foreign Ion Incorporation in the Biomineral Precursor Amorphous Calcium Carbonate

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ACC forms via aggregating prenucleation clusters that gatekeep its chemical composition. Ion identity steers the path: Ba and Sr substitute Ca in clusters, thereby inhibiting nucleation, with a dose‐dependent switch of Sr to induction. Mg partitions into Mg‐rich and Mg‐poor clusters; the latter form ACC, expelling Mg.

Structure Formation in Butterfly Scales: Interplay of Genetic Control, Mechanical Instabilities, and Dynamic Material Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Butterfly wing scales are intricate cuticular functional nanosctructures. This perspective suggests that spatially varying material properties, cytoskeletal constraints, and growth‐driven mechanical instabilities shape the resulting nanoscale architectures created from single cells.
