Molecular Detection and Distribution of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. Infections in Wild and Domestic Animals in Portugal. [PDF]

open access: yesTransbound Emerg Dis, 2023
Enteric protozoan parasites Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., and, to a lesser extent, the ciliate Balantioides coli are responsible for severe human and animal intestinal disorders globally. However, limited information is available on the occurrence and epidemiology of these parasites in domestic, but especially wild species in Portugal.

Wildlife as sentinels of compliance with law: An example with GPS‐tagged scavengers and sanitary regulations

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 10, Page 2188-2198, October 2023., 2023
GPS‐tagged scavengers allow the on‐ground monitoring of carcasses, the addressing of potential risks for wildlife, livestock and human health, the quantitative assessment of compliance with the law and would improve estimates of carcass availability, substantially contributing to more effective legislation enforcement.

soundClass: An automatic sound classification tool for biodiversity monitoring using machine learning

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 11, Page 2356-2362, November 2022., 2022
Abstract Passive acoustic monitoring, a non‐invasive technique, is increasingly used to study animal populations and habitats at much larger spatial and temporal scales than standard methods. However, easy to apply tools for reliable detection and classification of signals of interest among hundreds or even thousands of hours of recording are still ...

Trust your guts? The effect of gut section on diet composition and impact of Mus musculus on islands using metabarcoding

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 3, March 2022., 2022
In this article, we assessed the differences in diet estimates and potential ecological and economic impact measurements according to the section of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small and large intestine) analysed. We aimed to test which section(s) provided a better diet representation and putative impact of a common inland invader.

A cost‐effective video system for a rapid appraisal of deep‐sea benthic habitats: The Azor drift‐cam

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 8, Page 1379-1388, August 2021., 2021
Abstract Deep‐sea exploration relies on cutting‐edge technology, which generally requires expensive instruments, highly specialized technicians and ship time. The increasing need to gather large‐scale data on the distribution and conservation status of deep‐sea benthic species and habitats could benefit from the availability of low‐cost imaging tools ...

Stakeholders engagement as an important step for the long‐term monitoring of wild ungulate populations

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 2, Issue 3, July–September 2021., 2021
Ongoing monitoring is essential for the management of wildlife populations. The collaboration between local stakeholders and researchers is envisaged as an important partnership to monitor game species for long periods and vast territories. Here, we implemented a framework aimed at broadening the field applicability of Distance sampling techniques to ...

First record of the pencil cardinal Epigonus denticulatus (Perciformes: Epigonidae) in the Azores archipelago

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 99, Issue 1, Page 253-257, July 2021., 2021
Abstract The pencil cardinal Epigonus denticulatus is a small deep‐water fish inhabiting continental slopes usually between 300 and 600 m depth. We report the first record of E. denticulatus in the Azores archipelago, where one specimen was found floating by fisherman off Faial island.

A critical analysis of the potential for EU Common Agricultural Policy measures to support wild pollinators on farmland

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 57, Issue 4, Page 681-694, April 2020., 2020
To conserve pollinators and help protect pollination services, our expert elicitation highlights the need to create a variety of interconnected, well‐managed habitats that complement each other in the resources they offer. To achieve this the Common Agricultural Policy post‐2020 should take a holistic view to implementation that integrates the ...

Convolutional Neural Network for Seizure Detection of Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy

open access: yesComplexity, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
The Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (NFLE) is a form of epilepsy in which seizures occur predominantly during sleep. In other forms of epilepsy, the commonly used clinical approach mainly involves manual inspection of encephalography (EEG) signals, a laborious and time‐consuming process which often requires the contribution of more than one experienced
