Systems biology of the vervet monkey.
Nonhuman primates (NHP) provide crucial biomedical model systems intermediate between rodents and humans. The vervet monkey (also called the African green monkey) is a widely used NHP model that has unique value for genetic and genomic investigations of ...

Monkeys get a silver in Abstract Art Olympics [PDF]
Experiment shows that art students prefer abstract art to monkey art in about two-third of the cases. Since the number is above 50%, some argue that abstract art is different and better than animal art. I compare this result with figure skating competitions, where on average 73% of judges prefer gold medalist to silver medalist.

The Random Division of the Unit Interval and the Approximate -1 Exponent in the Monkey-at-the-Typewriter Model of Zipf's Law [PDF]
We show that the exponent in the inverse power law of word frequencies for the monkey-at-the-typewriter model of Zipf's law will tend towards -1 under broad conditions as the alphabet size increases to infinity and the letter probabilities are specified as the values from a random division of the unit interval.

South American monkeys in the development and testing of malarial vaccines - a review
South American Aoutus an d Saimiri monkeys, which are susceptible to infection with human malarias, have been used to develop models for the testing of huma malaria vaccines.

Multi-stage languages support generative metaprogramming via macros evaluated in a process preceding the actual interpretation or compilation of the program in which they are used. Macros update the source of their hosting program by emitting code that takes their place in the file, while their code may also be produced, fully or partially, by nested ...

Very slow activity fluctuations in monkey visual cortex: implications for functional brain imaging.
We examined fluctuations in band-limited power (BLP) of local field potential (LFP) signals recorded from multiple electrodes in visual cortex of the monkey during different behavioral states.

The animal reservoirs of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) have important role in the epidemiology of the bacteria and resistant genes. The present work searched fecal samples taken off nonhuman primates for the presence of VRE. Resistance profiles,

Quantifying task-relevant representational similarity using decision variable correlation [PDF]
Previous studies have compared the brain and deep neural networks trained on image classification. Intriguingly, while some suggest that their representations are highly similar, others argued the opposite. Here, we propose a new approach to characterize the similarity of the decision strategies of two observers (models or brains) using decision ...

Coding of Border Ownership in Monkey Visual Cortex
Areas V1 and V2 of the visual cortex have traditionally been conceived as stages of local feature representations. We investigated whether neural responses carry information about how local features belong to objects. Single-cell activity was recorded in
