Chemical State Detection and Charge Transfer in Complex Oxide Heterostructures via In Situ Auger Electron Spectroscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In situ Auger Electron Spectroscopy resolves oxidation states with high fidelity during the pulsed laser deposition of multivalent perovskite manganate and vanadate heterostructures. The chemical‐state signature is carried by the valence‐electron population of the transition‐metal cation, read out through the relative intensities of Auger fine ...

Optical Signature of Moiré Superlattices Formed by Twisted SrTiO3 Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We discover optical signatures from bonded interfaces in twisted SrTiO3 moiré superlattices, including low‐frequency Raman vibrational modes and strong second‐harmonic generation, consistent with strong interlayer coupling inferred from cross‐sectional electron microscopy and ab initio calculations. ABSTRACT Moiré superlattices formed at the interfaces

Surfactant protein A forms extensive lattice-like structures on 1,2-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine/rough-lipopolysaccharide-mixed monolayers

open access: yes, 2007
Due to the inhalation of airborne particles containing bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), these molecules might incorporate into the 1,2-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC)-rich monolayer and interact with surfactant protein A (SP-A), the major ...

Microbial and environmental implications for use of monolayers to reduce evaporative loss from water storages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
While the concept of applying surface layers to water bodies to reduce evaporative loss is an old one (La Mer, 1962), in practice, the economic and environmental costs of applying an artificial film thick enough to reduce evaporation has been limited to ...

Micro- and Nanostructured Polyaniline for Instant Identification of Metal Ions in Solution

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2019
The unique properties of nanomaterials enable the creation new analytical devices. Polyaniline (PANI) micro- and nanofiber network, freestanding in the gap between two gold microelectrodes, has been used in a new nanodetector for metal ions in solutions.

Atom Probe Tomography as an Emerging Tool for Understanding Defect‑Driven Mechanisms in HfO2‑Based Ferroelectrics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Perspective highlights atom probe tomography as a powerful tool for understanding the atomic‐scale defect chemistry in HfO2‐based ferroelectrics. 3D mapping of dopants, point defects, and interface chemistry can provide new insight into defect‐driven mechanisms underpinning the ferroelectricity in the system and guide the design of more reliable ...

Poly (Lauryl Methacrylate): spread monolayers and bulk configuration [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
Deuterated variations of poIy(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) have been synthesised, this involved the initial synthesis of the monomer (LMA). This was achieved by a transesterification reaction between methyl methacrylate and lauryl alcohol using either ...

The potential for monolayers to reduce the evaporation of water from large water storages

open access: yes, 2008
In the laboratory, molecularly thick films of compounds such as hexadecanol and octadecanol have been shown to retard the evaporation of water. While such monolayers offer the prospect of an economical solution to the evaporative loss of water from ...

Conformational Switching of Proteins on Material Surfaces Enabled by Peptide‐Oriented Adsorption

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Responsive biointerfaces could be achieved using conformationally responsive proteins; however, their interconversion can be lost upon surface adsorption. Herein, we demonstrate that the incorporation a Au binding peptide into calmodulin allows for binding control on Au wherein the protein retains conformational switching. This capability was confirmed
