Microbial and environmental implications for use of monolayers to reduce evaporative losses from water storages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
While the concept of applying surface films to water bodies to reduce evaporative loss is an old one, in practice, the economic and environmental costs of applying an artificial film thick enough to reduce evaporation has been limited to laboratory ...

Bioinspired Co‐Assembly Enables Multiscale Architected Hydrogels for 3D Printing With Integrated Antibacterial and Bioactive Functions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A multicomponent supramolecular hydrogel integrating cell‐adhesive and antibacterial peptides within an alginate‐cellulose nanofibril matrix is developed. Peptide co‐assembly simultaneously strengthens the hydrogel network, improves extrusion printability, and imparts cell‐adhesive and antibacterial functions, offering a versatile platform for ...

Nanomaterials-based gas sensors of SF(6) decomposed species for evaluating the operation status of high-voltage insulation devices

open access: yesHigh Voltage, 2019
In recent years, many novel sensing nanomaterials were explored experimentally and theoretically as chemical gas sensors to detect sulphur hexafluoride (SF(6)) decomposed species with rapid response, high sensitivity and selectivity, as well as low cost,

Reversible Tuning of Multiple Molecular Kinking for Stem Cell Regulation In Vivo

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, we introduce the novel concept of background component‐free “multiple kinks” material platform composed solely of liganded multiple kink‐bearing molecules as a strategy for dynamic biomaterial design. Tri‐kink molecules enable effective near‐infrared light‐triggered ligand masking and visible light‐triggered ligand exposure, thereby ...

Correlation of surface pressure and hue of planarizable push–pull chromophores at the air/water interface

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2017
It is currently not possible to directly measure the lateral pressure of a biomembrane. Mechanoresponsive fluorescent probes are an elegant solution to this problem but it requires first the establishment of a direct correlation between the membrane ...

High‐Speed Photoresponse of CVD‐Grown Lateral TMD Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Internal electric fields generated by p‐n junctions and asymmetric Schottky barriers enhance the photoresponse speed in CVD‐grown monolayer TMD lateral heterostructures. This results in a 1.5‐2 orders of magnitude reduction in rise and fall times for optimized device configurations compared to homogeneous single‐material devices, enabling bandwidths ...

Testing the effectiveness of monolayers under wind and wave conditions

open access: yes, 2012
Monolayers are highly desirable for their evaporation reducing capabilities due to their relatively minimal cost and ease of application. Despite these positive attributes, monolayers have consistently failed to perform effectively due to the harsh ...

Crystal Structure, Morphology, and Surface Termination of Cyan-Emissive, Six-Monolayers-Thick CsPbBr3 Nanoplatelets from X‑ray Total Scattering

open access: yes, 2020
Highly anisotropic colloidal CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) represent an appealing class of colloidal quantum wells with enhanced light emissivity. Strong quantum confinement imposed by the small platelet thickness and atomic flatness gives rise to ...

New BODIPY lipid probes for fluorescence studies of membranes

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2007
Many fluorescent lipid probes tend to loop back to the membrane interface when attached to a lipid acyl chain rather than embedding deeply into the bilayer.

Pressure‐Assisted Dimensional Transformation of 2D Hydrogenated Borophene into 0D Boron Quantum Dots

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Hydrogenated borophene (HB) is transformed into distinct boron nanostructures through a solvent‐free thermal process. Under flowing nitrogen, hydrogen escape promotes reconstruction into B2O3 nanoplatelets, whereas hydrogen‐induced pressure under sealed conditions facilitates fragmentation into boron quantum dots.
