Dewetting of cellular monolayers
The European Physical Journal E, 2012We investigate the physical principles of cellular layer stability. We show that cohesive cellular layers deposited on non-adhesive substrates are metastable and "dewet" by nucleation and growth of dry patches. The dewetting process can be induced either chemically by a non-adhesive surface treatment or, unlike simple liquids, physically by a decrease ...

Steroid hormones and monolayers

Monolayers of Polyvinylpyrrolidone Copolymers
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1971The surface properties of graft copolymers of polyvinylpyrrolidone and vinyl acetate were investigated. The vinyl acetate grafts anchor the copolymer to the surface. Compression forces the vinylpyrrolidone residues beneath the surface, imparting considerable flexibility and accounting for the high compressibility and low cohesion observed.

Domain formation in monolayers
Molecular Membrane Biology, 1995For phospholipids at the air/water interface we demonstrate that molecular chirality in some, but not in all, cases influences the domain shapes. In other cases chirality in the head group region can cause a chiral structure considering the tail arrangement. This indicates head group ordering. Minute changes of the molecular structure may change domain

Cryopreservation of Keratinocytes in a Monolayer
Cryobiology, 1999The cryopreservation of cells in tissues is one of the major challenges in current cryobiology, especially with regard to the progressively increasing field of tissue engineering. It is very questionable whether protocols which were developed for the cryopreservation of isolated cells are also applicable for cells in more complex structures, such as ...

We predict a highly stable and robust atomically thin gold monolayer with a hexagonal close packed lattice stabilized by strong relativistic effects and aurophilic attractions with maximum number of Au–Au bonds in the 2D plane.

Phospholipid and Protein Monolayers
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 1995We report on X-ray reflectivity and diffraction studies using monolayers of phospholipids and of the protein streptavidin specifically bound to monolayers. For phospholipids with the phosphocholine head group attached to the glycerol backbone via (flexible) ethylene oxide spacers, we demonstrate that the lateral interactions can be reduced by ...

Melting of the Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine Monolayer
Langmuir, 2018Langmuir monolayer self-assembled at the air-water interface represents an excellent model for studying phase transition and lipid polymorphism in two dimensions. Compared with numerous studies of phospholipid phase transitions induced by isothermal compression, there are very scarce reports on two-dimensional phase transitions induced by isobaric ...

Mixed monolayers of polypeptides
Colloid & Polymer Science, 1988Mixed monolayers of two polypeptides, poly-γ-methyl-L-glutamate and poly-L-alanine in the sameα-helix surface conformation, were studied at the water/air interface.

Cavitation of Langmuir monolayers
Physical Review E, 2002Cavitation in liquid expanded and liquid condensed Langmuir monolayers induced by laser heating or microbubble coalescence is studied experimentally using fluorescence and Brewster angle microscopy. The kinetics of hole closure of two-dimensional (2D) gaseous cavitation bubbles exhibits a decelerated dynamics for cavities surrounded by a liquid ...
