Publisher Summary There are two methods of affecting spreading of proteins on aqueous surfaces. Hughes and Ridea. Hughes, Fosbinder and Lessig found that solid particles, even of water insoluble proteins, spread very rapidly when carefully placed on the surface. The amount of material spread is determined by a modified Nernst balance.

Penetration of Polymer Monolayers
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1972Abstract Monolayers of polyvinylpyrrolidone copolymers interact more strongly with dissolved benzoic acid than with p -hydroxybenzoic acid. In bulk solutions of polyvinylpyrrolidone, the latter is more highly bound. This difference is ascribed to the highly oriented structure which polymers assume at interfaces.

Breathing Colloidal Monolayers
Journal of the American Chemical SocietyReversible polymorphic transitions are common in molecular crystals and have been utilized to design reconfigurable materials. However, translating this concept to colloidal superlattices, where microscale particles are the building blocks and distinct interactions are at play, remains a challenge.

Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 1986
The study of spread monolayers of proteins is of interest for understanding the fundamental behavior of proteins as well as the many phenomena resulting from their ubiquitous presence at interfaces in nature. Spread monolayers of proteins is a branch of the developing field of membrane mimetic chemistry.

The use of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for the functionalization of surfaces is extremely widespread among the scientific community, because they are easy to prepare and thermodynamically stable. Inferior binding uniformity, packing density, and molecular alignment have recently been observed also for SAMs made of thioether-based tripodal ligands ...
