The cinnamate/monolignol pathway

Phytochemistry Reviews, 2009
The cinnamate/monolignol pathway provides precursors for various phenylpropanoid compounds including lignins, lignans, neolignans, p-hydroxycinnamate esters, coumarins, suberins, flavonoids, stilbenes and so on. Therefore, the pathway plays the central role in plant secondary metabolism.

Structural basis for monolignol oxidation by a maize laccase

Nature Plants, 2020
Plant laccases catalyse the oxidation of monolignols in lignification, a process reinforcing the cell wall of many different cell types that provide mechanical support, nutrient transportation and defence against pathogens in plants1. The isozymes display a broad range of substrate preferences.

First synthesis of (1,2-13C2)-monolignol glucosides

Tetrahedron Letters, 2004
Abstract The monolignol glucosides (1,2-13C2)-p-glucocoumaryl alcohol, (1,2-13C2)-coniferin and (1,2-13C2)-syringin, and the glucosides of (1,2-13C2)-p-coumaric, (1,2-13C2)-ferulic and (1,2-13C2)-sinapic acids were synthesized by condensation of the corresponding aldehydes with (1,2,3-13C3)-malonic acid.

Systematic synthesis and identification of monolignol pathway metabolites

New Phytologist
SummaryMonolignol serves as the building blocks to constitute lignin, the second abundant polymer on Earth. Despite two decades of diligent efforts, complete identification of all metabolites in the currently proposed monolignol biosynthesis pathway has proven elusive. This limitation also hampers their potential application.

Metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli for microbial synthesis of monolignols

Metabolic Engineering, 2017
Monolignols are important plant metabolites involved in lignin biosynthesis. Their derivatives exhibit various physiological and pharmaceutical functions. Here, efficient enzymes were selected to construct p-coumaryl alcohol biosynthetic pathway and the titer reached 501.8±41.4mg/L under optimized conditions. The pathway was further extended to produce

Arabidopsis thaliana β-Glucosidases BGLU45 and BGLU46 hydrolyse monolignol glucosides

Phytochemistry, 2006
In higher plants, beta-glucosidases belonging to glycoside hydrolase (GH) Family 1 have been implicated in several fundamental processes including lignification. Phylogenetic analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana GH Family 1 has revealed that At1g61810 (BGLU45), At1g61820 (BGLU46), and At4g21760 (BGLU47) cluster with Pinus contorta coniferin beta ...
