Macular telangiectasia type 2 genetic risk variants associated with clinical characteristics in the Slovenian cohort

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Early diagnosis of macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel) remains challenging, and the contribution of genetic variation to its clinical heterogeneity is unclear. This study investigated associations between MacTel risk variants and clinical characteristics in a Slovenian cohort.

Importance of using genetic data to inform conservation captive breeding: A tale of two species of threatened macaws (Ara spp.)

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Unmanaged captive populations of threatened species often harbor hidden genetic risks, so using genomic tools, we audited a large private macaw collection and uncovered extensive hybridization and high inbreeding. Our findings provide an actionable framework for how routine genetic screening can be used to mitigate these risks, manage captive breeding ...

1175. Madeirina macrorhiza (Lowe ex Hooker) D. J. Crawford, M. Seq., Mort & J. K. Kelly, gen. nov. et comb. nov.

open access: yesCurtis's Botanical Magazine, EarlyView.
Summary Tolpis Adanson is a genus of some 15 species distributed primarily in the Macaronesian archipelagos of the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and Cape Verde Islands. A phylogenomic study resolved Tolpis as monophyletic with the Madeiran endemic species Tolpis macrorhiza sister to the remainder of the genus.

Anaesthetic management of a horse with acute kidney injury

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Anaesthetic management of animals with acute kidney injuries (AKI) is complex and poses considerable risk. There are no publications describing management of anaesthetised horses with AKI. Perioperative and anaesthetic care of a Thoroughbred filly presented with traumatic injuries and subsequent AKI is described.

Equine vegetative endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis due to refractory Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was the causative agent of vegetative endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis in a 24‐year‐old Irish draught gelding that presented with prolonged history of intermittent pyrexia and tachycardia. Clinical investigations revealed persistently reduced neck mobility, tachydysrhythmia and episodic pyrexia up to 41°C ...
