The Role of Dendritic Cells in Tissue‐Specific Autoimmunity

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
In this review, we explore the role of dendritic cell subsets in the development of tissue‐specific autoimmune diseases. From the increasing list of dendritic cell subclasses, it is becoming clear that we are only at the beginning of understanding the role of these antigen presenting cells in mediating autoimmunity.

Practice parameter: The role of corticosteroids in the management of acute monosymptomatic optic neuritis [RETIRED] [PDF]

open access: yesNeurology, 2000
Optic neuritis (ON) is an inflammatory disorder of the optic nerve. Most cases are idiopathic or associated with MS. ON can be associated with a variety of systemic or ocular disorders and is the most common acute optic neuropathy in adults younger than 46 years.

Biologic Therapy in Refractory Non-Multiple Sclerosis Optic Neuritis Isolated or Associated to Immune Mediated Inflammatory Diseases. A Multicenter Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
We aimed to assess the e cacy of biologic therapy in refractory non-Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Optic Neuritis (ON), a condition more infrequent, chronic and severe than MS ON.

Early Signs of Memory Impairment among Multiple Sclerosis Patients with Clinically Isolated Syndrome

open access: yesBehavioural Neurology, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 311-326, 2012., 2012
The study investigates primary and secondary verbal memory and motor/executive functions (response inhibition and strategy shifting ability) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). We studied 44 CIS patients and compared them to 49 patients with relapsing remitting MS (RR‐MS) displaying mild disability and to a ...

Switching and Escalating Therapy in Long‐Lasting Multiple Sclerosis: Not Always Necessary

open access: yesInternational Scholarly Research Notices, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Although therapy switch is common among patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), sometimes the initial prescribed treatment is maintained for a long period with clinical stability, low disability, and nonsignificant side effects. We aim to describe demographic and clinical characteristics of patients treated in our MS clinic with the same disease ...

Current Evidence for a Role of the Kynurenine Pathway of Tryptophan Metabolism in Multiple Sclerosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The kynurenine pathway (KP) is the major metabolic pathway of the essential amino acid tryptophan (TRP). Stimulation by inflammatory molecules, such as interferon-γ (IFN-γ), is the trigger for induction of the KP, driving a complex cascade of production ...

The Origin of Individual Differences in the Course and Severity of Diseases

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 6, Issue 1, Page 1674-1704, 2006., 2006
Any disease manifests itself individually either by a bright or restricted spectrum of clinical signs and resultant clinical courses that range from asymptomatic to deadly, from acute to chronic, etc. Until recently, the origin of this kind of biodiversity was poorly investigated and understood, but advances in immunology — especially in identifying ...
