Monotonicity and the Expressibility of NP Operators

Mathematical Logic Quarterly, 1994
AbstractWe investigate why similar extensions of first‐order logic using operators (that is, generalized quantifiers) corresponding to NP‐complete decision problems apparently differ in expressibility: the logics capture either NP or LNP. It had been conjectured that the complexity class captured is NP if and only if the operator is monotone.

Characterization of approximate monotone operators

2022
The authors study approximate monotone operators. They show that a well-known property of monotone operators, namely, representing by convex functions, remains valid for this larger class of operators. In this general framework, results of \textit{S.

Operator Reverse Monotonicity of the Inverse

The American Mathematical Monthly, 2011
AbstractIn statistics and econometrics, the equivalence between matrix inequalities A ≥ B ⇔ B−1 ≥ A−1 is used to obtain a lower bound on the variance matrix, where A, B are symmetric and positive definite. The same property holds for linear operators on Hilbert spaces that are bijective, self-adjoint, and positive definite.
