Controlling Frost Propagation on Polymeric Surfaces Using SI‐ATRP Chemical Micropatterning

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Local wettability differences on the polymeric substrates grafted with hydrophilic stripes are linked to local variations in the presence and state of molecular water layer (MWL). The localized MWL results in fast‐propagating freezing events on the hydrophilic stripes followed by slower freezing propagation across the more hydrophobic substrate, thus ...

Adjoint Monte Carlo Method [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This survey explores the development of adjoint Monte Carlo methods for solving optimization problems governed by kinetic equations, a common challenge in areas such as plasma control and device design. These optimization problems are particularly demanding due to the high dimensionality of the phase space and the randomness in evaluating the objective

Machine Learning‐Accelerated Reconstruction of Periodic Nanostructures with X‐ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy Methods

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the use of neural networks to accelerate nanostructure reconstruction from grazing incidence X‐ray fluorescence data, by replacing computationally expensive finite‐element method (FEM) simulations. The results show that neural networks can achieve accurate reconstructions while reducing computation time by several orders of ...

Species identification in fish meal from urban fisheries biomass with DNA metabarcoding analysis

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 2, Issue 6, Page 562-571, December 2022., 2022
Fish species constructing fish meal (FM) made from urban fisheries biomass, which is fisheries by‐products collected downstream in the seafood supply chain were detected with a DNA metabarcoding method. 81–122 species were detected in the FM, and fish species indicated as Critically Endangered (CR) or Endangered (EN) on the International Union for ...

Wide‐Field Bond Quality Evaluation Using Frequency Domain Thermoreflectance with Deep Neural Network Feature Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
In this work, wide‐field (>1 mm2) frequency‐domain thermoreflectance (FDTR) hyperspectral imaging is used to image subsurface indium bump bonds 50 µm below the surface. Thermal analysis with Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation is used to evaluate bump quality, while a trained deep neural network (can rapidly reconstruct bump geometry contact area maps.

How Monte Carlo heuristics aid to identify the physical processes of drug release kinetics

open access: yesMethodsX, 2018
We implement a Monte Carlo heuristic algorithm to model drug release from a solid dosage form. We show that with Monte Carlo simulations it is possible to identify and explain the causes of the unsatisfactory predictive power of current drug release ...
