A Possible Failure Mode for Leeward Mooring Lines on a Floating Storage Unit
Volume 1: Offshore Technology, 2013The floating storage unit Navion Saga at the Volve field in the North Sea suffered from two mooring line breaks in steel wire ropes in 2011. Investigations of the broken ropes indicated that a possible failure mechanism could be high stresses near the wire socket induced by large bending moments in leeward mooring lines.

Spectral Graph-Based Networks for Mooring Line Failure Detection on FPSO
Volume 1: Offshore TechnologyAbstract Robust monitoring is vital in offshore oil and gas exploration, especially for Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) platforms pivotal in subsea hydrocarbon extraction. Motivated by the glaring absence of failure detection systems in mooring lines on FPSOs, this work tackles the broader issue of inadequate ...

Time domain simulation of a one line failure for a DP-assisted mooring system
Journal of Marine Science and Application, 2014This paper focuses on the research of a semi-submersible platform equipped with a DP-assisted mooring system. Based on the working principles of the DP-assisted mooring system and the model of the platform motion, a time domain simulation program is applied to analyze the impact, in the case of one line failure, on the platform motion, power ...

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gained popularity in recent years for offshore engineering applications, and one such challenging application is detection of mooring line failure of a floating offshore platform. For most types of floating offshore platforms, accurately detecting any mooring line damage and/or failures is of ...

Torsional failure of a wire rope mooring line during installation in deep water
Engineering Failure Analysis, 1999Abstract During the deployment of mooring components for an FPSO in deep water excessive torsional distortion was induced which led to failure of all six spiral strand mooring ropes. A mechanism has been investigated which accounts for the failures.

Evaluation of Safe and Failure Zones of Risers and Mooring Lines of Floating Production Systems
Volume 1: Offshore Technology, 2013In recent years, the design procedures of risers and mooring system for floating production systems (FPS) have had more feedback. In this way mooring and risers designers can identify, even in an early stage, the constraints imposed by one system over the other. This work presents an evaluation of the crossing of the information obtained

Volume 7: Ocean Renewable Energy
Abstract The potential sites for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) in Taiwan are mostly located in shallow water depths ranging from 50 m to 100 m. Recent studies reveal that semi-taut mooring appears to be a feasible solution for FOWTs in shallow waters. However, the potential area is also one of the busiest navigation channels in

The Safety Analysis of a FPSO Temporary Mooring System at Quayside With One Line Failure
Volume 5A: Ocean EngineeringAbstract The Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) has a long outfitting period at the dock, which will coincide with the typhoon season. In general, the prediction of temporary mooring system safety does not consider the impact of transient stage of mooring line failure.
