Controlling line tension in thruster assisted mooring systems

Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (Cat. No.99CH36328), 2003
Addresses the potential for energy reduction obtained by using dynamic line tensioning in thruster assisted position mooring systems. Traditionally, mooring systems have been designed in such a way that thruster assistance has not been necessary under normal environmental conditions.

Experimental evaluation of the tension mooring effect on the response of moored ships

Coastal Engineering, 2014
Abstract Tension mooring may be applied to improve operational and security conditions of exposed port terminals. This paper analyses the influence of the type of fender facing on the efficacy of tension mooring in terms of reduction of the moored ship motions and improvement of the operational and security conditions at berth.

Performance Of Mooring System Tension Members

Proceedings OCEANS '83, 1983
The subject of mooring lines encompasses a broad spectrum of service requirements (water depths, sea states, tensile loadings, and useful service lives) and a wide variety of candidate mooring members (chain, wire rope, synthetic fiber rope, electromechanical cables, or combinations of these elements). For some systems, a suitable mooring line may have

Extreme Value Estimation of Mooring Lines Top Tension

Volume 3: Structures, Safety, and Reliability, 2019
Abstract It is known that the mooring system of floating platforms responds non-linearly to environmental loads. Even though the wave-frequency excitation can be assumed as a Gaussian process, the line tension generally is not a Gaussian process due to the second-order slow-drift floater motions and the nonlinearities of the system ...

Mixture distribution model for extreme mooring tension and mooring fatigue analysis due to snap loads

Ocean Engineering, 2021
Abstract Three hybrid moorings are proposed for the station keeping of wave energy converters. The hybrid mooring leg consists of top synthetic fibre rope (nylon or polyester), intermediate buoy and bottom chain (with or without clumped weights attached).

Mooring Line Tensions Prediction Based on MLP for Soft Yoke Mooring System

Volume 5B: Ocean Engineering
Abstract The soft yoke mooring system is widely used for the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) in shallow water. However, there were accidents of mooring system being pulled down by the FPSO in field. It is hence necessary to conduct realtime prediction of mooring line tensions.

Extreme mooring cable tensions due to wave-frequency excitations

Applied Ocean Research, 1998
The mooring cables of floating platforms respond non-linearly to the fairlead motions. Even though the wave-frequency excitation can be assumed to be a Gaussian process, the cable tension generally is not. Industry regulations prescribe calculation of maximum wave-frequency cable tension to obtain the total design value.

Statistics of Mooring-Line Tension in Random Waves

Offshore Technology Conference, 1989
ABSTRACT Dynamics and fatigue analysis have been used quite frequently to evaluate mooring systems for permanent applications. In a conventional frequency domain approach, the distribution of tension amplitudes is obtained from the spectral density function of tension variation assuming, that the amplitudes are ...

Experimental investigation of nonlinear dynamic tension in mooring lines

Journal of Marine Science and Technology, 2012
Mooring lines are one of the most important parts of spar platforms. In this work, experimental investigation was carried out to obtain the dynamic tension and discover the nonlinear characters while a mooring line transfers from taut to taut–slack. Results show that, when system parameters change, the mooring line system may transform from one steady ...

Mooring line tension observed through a maximum entropy spectrum

Journal of Marine Science and Technology, 1999
A method for measuring mooring line tension is proposed based on observation of the natural frequencies of the mooring line segment between the winch and the fairlead. The anchor line tension is observed through the string equation where an analytical expression for the line's eigen-frequencies is obtained.
