Linking variation in genome size to cyst size in chrysophytes

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Genome size varies tremendously across eukaryotes, which often contain far more DNA than expected from their biological complexity. To explain this paradox, selection‐based hypotheses propose that genome size evolves through selection acting on life‐history traits correlated with the phenotypic effects, independent of its genic content.

Do Parasite Effects on Fish Body Condition Depend on Host Size and External Temperature? A Meta‐Analytic Approach

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Evaluating relationships between host body condition indices (BCIs) and parasite infections is a common approach for assessing the negative effects of parasites on host health. Researchers generally expect negative correlations between BCIs and infection levels; however, empirical results are often highly variable among host–parasite systems.

Childhood cognitive control as a predictor of long‐term clinical and functional outcomes in Tourette syndrome

open access: yesJournal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Volume 67, Issue 9, Page 1525-1536, September 2026.
Background Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood‐onset neuropsychiatric condition characterized by motor and vocal tics. Many individuals with TS continue to experience tics and functional difficulties into adulthood, yet the factors influencing these long‐term trajectories remain poorly understood.

Catalyst‐Free Cyanation of Arenes by Acetonitrile in a Plasma–Liquid Microreactor

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, Volume 32, Issue 32, 24 August 2026.
An original approach of arylnitrile synthesis was developed by generating an argon plasma in contact with solutions of arene in acetonitrile within a gas‐liquid microreactor. Plasma activation of acetonitrile generated cyano radicals, enabling a catalyst‐free C‐H cyanation of arenes.

Benzophenone Derivatives as a New Class of Anti‐Infectives Against Acanthamoeba spp

open access: yesArchiv der Pharmazie, Volume 359, Issue 8, August 2026.
Analogues of the human oxidosqualene cyclase inhibitor Ro 48‐8071 were designed, synthesized, and tested against Acanthamoeba hatchetti, one of the pathogens causing Acanthamoeba keratitis. The N‐propargyl derivative 4f showed strong amoebicidal activity with complete eradication of trophozoites and cysts, while exhibiting low toxicity toward human ...

New approach to health and the environment to avoid future pandemics

open access: yesAnimal Sentience, 2020
This commentary expands Wiebers & Feigin’s target article by pinpointing how declining wildlife, expanding livestock and globalisation contribute to the increase in epidemics of zoonotic diseases, the COVID-19 crisis and future health crises.
