Adipose‐derived small extracellular vesicles exacerbate microvascular dysfunction in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction via mmu‐miR‐582‐3p‐mediated Rap1b suppression

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
This study reveals that small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from visceral fat compromise coronary microcirculation in a mouse model of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The SGLT2 inhibitor canagliflozin emerges as a therapeutic strategy, improving cardiac function and endothelial health.

Comparative diagnostic accuracy study of point of care ultrasound techniques for detection of left atrial enlargement by hospital medicine physicians from archived echocardiogram images

open access: yesJournal of Hospital Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Left atrial enlargement (LAE) is predictive of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Prior studies of point‐of‐care ultrasound (POCUS) interpretation methods for identifying LAE utilized older echocardiographic reference ranges. Objectives Compare the test characteristics of hospitalist‐performed POCUS techniques for identifying ...

Design characteristics of studies evaluating the effect of non‐surgical periodontal treatment on systemic health outcomes

open access: yesJournal of Periodontology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Evidence for whether and how non‐surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) improves systemic outcomes remains equivocal. Inconclusive findings may in part be due to design variations of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in this field.
