Glucocorticoids modulate drug transporter function in human fetal brain endothelial cells

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend P‐glycoprotein and breast cancer resistance protein are the most prominent drug transporters at the fetal blood–brain barrier. We isolated primary human fetal brain endothelial cells from early and mid‐gestation cerebral microvessels and exposed them to glucocorticoids cortisol and dexamethasone in vitro.

RECOVERY OF FIBRINOLYTIC AND COLLAGENOLYTIC ENZYMES FROM FISH AND SHRIMP BYPRODUCTS: POTENTIAL SOURCE FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS

open access: yesBoletim do Instituto de Pesca, 2019
Fish and shrimp industries generate a significant amount of by-products. These by-products can be used for the extraction of enzymes of biomedical interest, such as fibrinolytic and collagenolytic.

Maternal nutrition as a key determinant of placental and developing blood–brain barrier xenobiotic protective functions

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Suboptimal maternal nutrition alters placental and developing blood–brain barrier (BBB) protective function and is associated with increased fetal brain vulnerability. In the placenta, nutritional adversity may reduce the exchange surface area and promote meta‐inflammation, compromising barrier efficiency in a model‐ and context ...

Virus‐specific alterations in placental structure and transporter expression following maternal arbovirus infection

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Arboviruses induce virus‐specific alterations in placental structure and functional markers. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) exposure was associated with reduced syncytiotrophoblast and syncytial knot areas, increased cytotrophoblast proliferation (Ki‐67) and thyroid transporter (MCT8) expression, reduced protective (P‐gp and BCRP ...

Pollen landscape saturation on pollinator bodies reduces pollen deposition by subsequently visited bat‐pollinated flowers

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 10, Page 3190-3199, October 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Sexual selection in flowering plants often operates through male–male competition, yet the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain difficult to demonstrate. One potential arena for such competition is pollen placement on pollinators, where pollen grains from ...
