Balamuthia mandrillaris: Morphology, biology, and virulence.
Balamuthia mandrillaris is a protist pathogen that can cause encephalitis with a fatality rate of >95%. This is due to our incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of B. mandrillaris encephalitis. B. mandrillaris has two stages in its life cycle, an active trophozoite stage during which it divides mitotically.

Nuclear Morphology and the Biology of Cancer Cells [PDF]
Background: For more than a century, diagnostic pathologists have used morphologic abnormalities of the nucleus as essential diagnostic features to distinguish benign from malignant cells. These features include nuclear enlargement and increased nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio, nuclear membrane irregularities, hyperchromasia, and abnormal chromatin ...

Goldfish morphology as a model for evolutionary developmental biology [PDF]
Morphological variation of the goldfish is known to have been established by artificial selection for ornamental purposes during the domestication process. Chinese texts that date to the Song dynasty contain descriptions of goldfish breeding for ornamental purposes, indicating that the practice originated over one thousand years ago.

ASTROCYTOMAS AND PROGNOSIS-FROM MORPHOLOGY TO TUMOR BIOLOGY [PDF]
Twenty-seven cases of Astrocytoma were studied to assess the role of a newly introduced proliferation marker-Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) in improving prognostic accuracy in comparison to traditional histologic methods like grading. The study revealed a direct correlation between grading and PCNA expression as determined by labelling ...

Morphology and Biology of Reptiles [PDF]
tion. Since nine-banded armadillos are born in litters of genetically identical quadruplets, there is no genetic variation within families. Therefore, there can be no selection within families as a result of interactions between sibs. The hypothetical evolution of strong sib altruism in the nine-banded armadillo would have to occur by selection at the ...

Molecular insights into the axon guidance molecules Sidestep and Beaten path
The transmembrane protein Sidestep (Side) functions as a substrate-bound attractant for motor axons in Drosophila. Outgrowing motor axons recognize Side via Beaten path Ia (Beat) and migrate along Side-expressing tissues.
