In‐hospital mortality after rectal cancer surgery is strongly correlated with annual hospital caseload. This is the result of an increased failure‐to‐rescue rate in the case of postoperative complications in low‐volume hospitals rather than the result of an increased overall rate of complications.

Trauma models to identify major trauma and mortality in the prehospital setting
Currently available prehospital trauma models perform reasonably in predicting in‐hospital mortality, but are inadequate at identifying patients who have experienced major trauma. Future research should focus on which patients would benefit from treatment in a major trauma centre.

Remdesivir y reducción de mortalidad en pacientes con COVID-19: análisis sistematizado de subgrupos de los ensayos clínicos [PDF]
Objective: Remdesivir has not shown survival benefit for patients with severe COVID-19. However, subgroup analysis of ACTT-1 Study Group showed an apparent reduction in mortality for patients who required non-high-flow oxygen.

Trainee performance in radical gastrectomy and its effect on outcomes
This study of 272 D2 gastrectomies investigated whether trainee involvement was associated with adverse outcomes. No significant difference in morbidity, mortality, operating time, number of nodes resected, hospital stay or predicted 5‐year survival was noted, demonstrating that outcomes are not compromised by supervised trainee involvement.

Epidemiology of paediatric injuries in Rwanda using a prospective trauma registry
This study evaluated the demographics and outcomes of paediatric injury in Rwanda through a prospective trauma registry to inform capacity‐building for prevention and treatment. Patients treated in the capital city had a higher incidence of head injury and a higher overall injury‐related mortality than those in a rural town.
