The burden of premature opioid‐related mortality [PDF]

open access: yesAddiction, 2014
The burden of premature mortality due to opioid-related death has not been fully characterized. We calculated temporal trends in the proportion of deaths attributable to opioids and estimated years of potential life lost (YLL) due to opioid-related mortality in Ontario, Canada.Cross-sectional study.Ontario, Canada.Individuals who died of opioid-related

Packed for Ossification: High‐Density Bioprinting of hPDC Spheroids in HAMA Toward Endochondral Ossification

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Human periosteum‐derived cell spheroids bioprinted at high density within a hyaluronic acid matrix promote fusion and hypertrophic cartilage formation in vitro. Early encapsulation enhances spheroid interaction and matrix maturation, generating scalable cartilage templates intended for endochondral bone regeneration.

Physicochemical Reinforcement Unlocks Sterilization‐Stable Anisotropic Hydrogels for Cell‐Compatible Mock Arteries

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In vitro arterial models offer ethical and robust alternatives for vascular research but require cytocompatible materials that replicate physiological mechanics. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels produced by directional freezing and salting‐out (PVA DFSO) are anisotropic yet lack stability for cell culture. Herein, methacrylated PVA (PVA‐MA)

Airborne 1O2 Delivery via a Superhydrophobic Dressing as a Pathway to Next‐Generation Wound Therapies, an in Vivo Murine Burn Model Study

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of the SH bandage placed on an infected burn wound and its role in wound healing. A superhydrophobic PDMS membrane coated with the PS verteporfin is placed over the wound area and illuminated with a red laser at 690 nm, generating airborne 1O2 above the tissue.

Fatal Attraction? Access to Early Retirement and Mortality [PDF]

open access: yes
We estimate the causal effect of early retirement on mortality for blue-collar workers. To overcome the problem of endogenous selection, we exploit an exogenous change in unemployment insurance rules in Austria that allowed workers in eligible regions to

Estimating the global burden of endemic canine rabies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: Rabies is a notoriously underreported and neglected disease of lowincome countries. This study aims to estimate the public health and economic burden of rabies circulating in domestic dog populations, globally and on a country-by-country ...

Bacteria‐Responsive Nanostructured Drug Delivery Systems for Targeted Antimicrobial Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bacteria‐responsive nanocarriers are designed to release antimicrobials only in the presence of infection‐specific cues. This selective activation ensures drug release precisely at the site of infection, avoiding premature or indiscriminate release, and enhancing efficacy.

Comparative analysis of neonatal mortality causes between premature and term newborns in an intensive care unit

open access: yesMedicina Universitaria
Background: Neonatal mortality accounts for up to 70% of infant deaths and 50% of deaths in children under five. This study aims to quantify neonatal mortality rates per 1000 live births and identify common causes, comparing premature and term infants ...
