Insecticides and mosquito-borne disease

Nature, 2000
Insecticide resistance in mosquitoes can also interfere with developing parasites. The primary means of controlling mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and filariasis is still by residual spraying with insecticides. Here we show that insecticide-resistant Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes are less likely to transmit filariasis than their ...

Mosquito-Borne Diseases

2000
Mosquitoes are flies in the insect family Culicidae which are the primary arthropod vectors of human diseases worldwide. They are particularly known as vectors of the agents of malaria, yellow fever, dengue, and filariasis in tropical countries. This chapter explores the biology, ecology, and disease relationships of mosquitoes, including discussion of

The palaeogeography of mosquito-borne disease

Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 1983
Malaria parasites Plasmodiidae and their evolutionary precursors (Haemoproteidae arc found in reptiles, birds and mammals. The distribution of reptile plasmodiids relative to the former Panamanian portal suggests an origin in the very early Tertiary at the latest. Fossil vectors are known from the Lower Cretaceous.
