Generation Rather Than Sex Shapes Wing Morphology in Cydalima perspectalis (Lepidoptera, Crambidae): Insights From Geometric Morphometrics and Climate‐Based Projections

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
An integrated framework combining geometric morphometrics and ecological niche modeling was applied to Cydalima perspectalis to assess intergenerational morphological variation, test sexual dimorphism, and predict future distribution under climate scenarios. Wing shape effectively discriminated between generations but not between sexes.

FLIES

open access: yes, 2013
Like flies in a cage our thoughts randomly move. A neurone fires. A multitude of neurones fire and create thoughts, consciousness. In doing so, the quadrants (i.e.

Physiological Host Range of the Tachinid Istocheta aldrichi, a Potential Biological Control Agent for the Japanese Beetle in Europe

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
This study provides the first laboratory assessment of the physiological host range of Istocheta aldrichi, a candidate biological control agent for Popillia japonica in Europe. In sequential no‐choice tests with 14 European scarab beetles, the parasitoid oviposited on six species but successfully developed only in the two Rutelinae Anomala vitis and ...

A comparison of manual and automatic moth sampling methods (Lepidoptera : Arctiidae, Geometridae) in a rain forest in Costa Rica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Sampling with UV fluorescent light tubes is a commonly used technique both in applied and basic insect studies. Our study compares the performance of two such methods: manual sampling (light towers) and automatic sampling (funnel light traps).

Tachinidae (Diptera) as Floral Visitors and Pollinators in Natural and Managed Systems

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We review the roles of bristle flies (Tachinidae) as pollinators in natural and managed systems. We find that most tachinid genera visit flowers and that floral‐adapted mouthparts have evolved repeatedly many times in the family. We review patterns of floral specificity and assess the efficacy of tachinids as pollinators with case studies.

Local outbreaks of Operophtera brumata and Operophtera fagata cannot be explained by low vulnerability to pupal predation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
One of the unresolved questions in studies on population dynamics of forest Lepidoptera is why some populations at times reach outbreak densities, whereas others never do.

Parasitic wasp‐associated polydnavirus and venom affect arthropod community assembly on wild cabbage via the caterpillar host

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Cotesia glomerata polydnavirus and venom, either alone or in combination, affect colonisation by members of the arthropod community in a natural field setting. Plants damaged by P. brassicae injected with both polydnavirus and venom were colonised more often by Mamestra brassicae caterpillars, Myzus persicae aphids and aphid parasitoids compared to ...

The development of a lure and kill system for control of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)

open access: yes, 2012
The Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a polyphagous pest of global economic importance. As a result, many systems have been proposed to reduce their impact and population spread, each of which has its ...

Drain Flies (Moth Flies or Filter Flies) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
3 pp., 2 illustrationsDrain flies can be a common problem in homes. They live and reproduce in drains and septic tank field lines. The first step in controlling these pests is identifying the source of the infestation.
