Learning Prioritized Control of Motor Primitives [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Many tasks in robotics can be decomposed into sub-tasks that are performed simultaneously. In many cases, these sub-tasks cannot all be achieved jointly and a prioritization of such sub-tasks is required to resolve this issue. In this paper, we discuss a novel learning approach that allows to learn a prioritized control law built on a set of sub-tasks ...

Robust Spot Melting by 3D Spot Arrangements in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes an approach to replace separately melted contours for spot melting in electron beam powder fusion. Adapting the spot arrangements close to the contour combined with stacking yields a comparable surface quality without the inherent challenges of separate contours, as demonstrated, by electron optical images and roughness measurements.

Kinematic primitives for a quadruped robot walk and trot with compliant legs

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2014
In this work we research the role of body dynamics in the complexity of kinematic patterns in a quadruped robot with compliant legs. Two gait patterns, lateral sequence walk and trot, along with leg length control patterns of different complexity were ...

Muscle synergies after stroke are correlated with perilesional high gamma. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Movements can be factored into modules termed "muscle synergies". After stroke, abnormal synergies are linked to impaired movements; however, their neural basis is not understood. In a single subject, we examined how electrocorticography signals from the

Ferroelectricity in Antiferromagnetic Wurtzite Nitrides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We establish MnSiN2${\rm MnSiN}_2$ and MnGeN2${\rm MnGeN}_2$ as aristotypes of a new multiferroic wurtzite family that simultaneously exhibits ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism with altermagnetic spin splitting. By strategically substituting alkaline‐earth metals, we predict new materials with coexisting switchable polarization, spin texture, and

Learning and Transfer of Modulated Locomotor Controllers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We study a novel architecture and training procedure for locomotion tasks. A high-frequency, low-level "spinal" network with access to proprioceptive sensors learns sensorimotor primitives by training on simple tasks. This pre-trained module is fixed and

Additive Manufacturing of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys for Elastocaloric Applications: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing enables complex NiTi architectures that overcome key limitations in elastocaloric refrigeration, including poor heat transfer and high mechanical work input. This review surveys recent advances in LPBF‐ and DED‐fabricated NiTi shape memory alloys for elastocaloric applications, highlighting process–structure–performance ...

Definition and composition of motor primitives using latent force models and hidden Markov models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this work a different probabilistic motor primitive parameterization is proposed using latent force models (LFMs). The sequential composition of different motor primitives is also addressed using hidden Markov models (HMMs) which allows to capture the

In‐Memory Euclidean Distance Computation in a Stacked Memristor Crossbar for Hardware Self‐Organizing Maps

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A stacked memristor crossbar architecture is presented that enables direct in‐memory computation of Euclidean distance through intrinsic current subtraction at a shared middle electrode. By physically encoding weights and squared weights in vertically aligned layers, the system realizes energy‐efficient self‐organizing map learning, demonstrating ...
