Contribution of Aloft Gravitational Sorting and Lower‐Part Coalescence to Precipitation Over the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 14, 28 July 2026.
Abstract Observational constraints on the vertical microphysical evolution of mixed‐phase precipitation across the melting layer over the high‐altitude of southeastern Tibetan Plateau remain scarce. Using collocated two‐dimensional video disdrometer and Micro Rain Radar measurements in rainy seasons of 2022–2025, we characterize the vertical ...

The Synoptic, Microphysical, and Radar Characteristics of Upper Great Lakes Snow Events

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 14, 28 July 2026.
Abstract The upper Great Lakes region is well‐known for significant snowfall during the winter months. The microphysical characteristics of the snow depend to a great degree on snow particle formation and growth processes that are linked to regime‐dependent environmental conditions.

Reconfigurable Nonlinear Activation Using Low‐Loss Ge3Sb2Te15 for Photonic Neural Networks

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 15, Issue 14, 27 July 2026.
Composition‐engineered, low‐loss Ge3Sb2Te15 is identified from high‐throughput GST spreads and integrated with silicon microring resonators. Multistate optical programming produces tunable resonance responses and diverse fixed‐wavelength optical nonlinear activation functions, connecting phase‐change material discovery with programmable nanophotonic ...

Influence of Backside Surface and Subsurface Damage in Gallium Nitride Wafers on Facet Quality and Violet‐Emitting Laser Diode Performance

open access: yesphysica status solidi (a), Volume 223, Issue 14, 22 July 2026.
Backside thinning techniques critically influence GaN laser performance. Compared to lapping, grinding reduces subsurface damage depth fivefold and lowers wafer bow, while mechanical polishing eliminates subsurface damage entirely. These improvements directly translate to smoother cleaved facets and a nearly 40% reduction in laser threshold current ...
