MRSA—the tip of the iceberg [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Microbiology and Infection, 2006
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains cause serious nosocomial infections all over the world. Overall, approximately 20% of S. aureus isolates in Europe are reported as methicillin-resistant, whereas in US hospitals the prevalence ranges from 33% to 55%.

Optimising effective parameters to improve performance quality in lateral flow immunoassay for detection of PBP2a in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Nanoscience, 2020
Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is the most widely used platform of the point-of-care (POC) detection. Since the most important factor in deciding the results of this technique is the visual quality of the test, it should be at its optimum.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus as a cause of chronic wound infections: Alternative strategies for management

open access: yesAIMS Microbiology, 2022
Biofilm formation at the level of a wound plays an important role in its chronicization. The difficulty of its eradication has driven research toward the discovery and synthesis of new molecules that can act on biofilm to promote wound healing.

Multifunctional Hydroxyapatite Coated with Gallium Liquid Metal‐Based Silver Nanoparticles for Infection Prevention and Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A multifunctional hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating integrated with silver‐gallium liquid metal nanoparticles (HAp‐Ag‐GaNPs) exhibits dual antibacterial and osteogenic properties. It effectively inhibits Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria, including resistant strains, while enhancing bone regeneration.

Bioinspired Shape Reconfigurable, Printable, and Conductive “E‐Skin” Patch with Robust Antibacterial Properties for Human Health Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, Hojin Kim, Sayan Deb Dutta, and co‐workers report a shape‐reconfigurable, 3D printable, and highly adhesive slime‐like ‘electronic skin’ or ‘E‐skin’ patch for human health sensing and tissue engineering applications. The dual reinforcement of hydrogel patch with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) improve the ...

Microbubble‐Controlled Delivery of Biofilm‐Targeting Nanoparticles to Treat MRSA Infection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, an effective strategy using microbubble (MB)‐controlled delivery of biofilm‐targeting nanoparticles (BTNs) for removal and therapy of methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) biofilm infections is introduced. In vivo delivery of MB with BTN is demonstrated to silence key bacterial genes involved in biofilm formation (icaA), bacterial ...

The new fifth-generation cephalosporins – a balance between safety and efficacy [PDF]

open access: yesRomanian Journal of Pharmaceutical Practice, 2020
Cephalosporins are beta-lactam antibiotics classified into five generations. The newest generation has three representatives: ceftaroline fosamile, the combination ceftolozane/tazobactam (cephalosporin/beta-lactamase inhibitor), and ceftobiprole ...

Enhanced Sonodynamic Bacterial Elimination and Wound Healing Therapy Based on Lanthanide Ion Doped Bi2WO6 Nanosheets and Hydrogel Platform

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Lanthanide ytterbium ions are introduced into Bi2WO6 nanosheets to boost ROS generation under US stimulation. These ytterbium‐doped Bi2WO6 nanosheets serve as efficient sonosensitizers, enabling broad‐spectrum bacterial eradication. To improve biocompatibility for in vivo sonodynamic therapy, the sonosensitizers are integrated into hydrogel matrix ...
