Predictions of volcanic eruptions at Mt Vesuvius, Italy

Abstract We present a mathematically-based model for predicting the likelihood of future eruptions of Vesuvius and, by implication, other volcanoes. The volcanic activity of Vesuvius in the period 1630–1989 is described by a compound Poisson distribution with a gamma compounding density.
