Mucinous Eccrine Carcinoma of the Eyelid

Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 1996
A 78-year-old woman with recurrent chalazia of the upper eyelid was found to have mucinous eccrine carcinoma. This rare pathologic entity, with low metastatic potential, nevertheless has a significant recurrence rate. This case underscores the importance of considering this tumor in recalcitrant eyelid lesions and highlights the pathology of this tumor.

Histochemically, the mucin is of the sialomucin type. The tumor is commonly a round, elevated, reddish, and sometimes ulcerated mass, usually located on the face, head, or trunk.
