The aim of this study was to establish reference values for mucociliary clearance and mucociliary clearance reserve capacity as determined by beta 2-adrenergic agonist-induced increase in mucociliary clearance. We studied 62 healthy females (n = 33) and males (n = 29). Their ages ranged evenly between 18 and 84 years.

Mammalian Respiratory Mucociliary Clearance
Archives of Environmental Health: An International Journal, 1973An in vivo model was designed to provide information on the major factors affecting mammalian mucociliary clearance. It involves simultaneous quantitation of mucous load, tracheal transport velocity, ciliary beat frequency, and rheological properties of mucus. Values in 23 cats were obtained. The results were remarkably consistent for the group as well

Mucociliary clearance: pathophysiological aspects
Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging, 2013SummaryMucociliary clearance has long been known to be a significant innate defence mechanism against inhaled microbes and irritants. Important knowledge has been gathered regarding the anatomy and physiology of this system, and in recent years, extensive studies of the pathophysiology related to lung diseases characterized by defective mucus clearance

Mucociliary clearance after external dacryocystorhinostomy
Clinical Otolaryngology and Allied Sciences, 2004We investigated the nasal mucociliary clearance time in 17 patients who underwent a primary unilateral external dacryocystorhinostomy operation. Mucociliary clearance function in both nasal cavities was assessed with the saccharin test. The results were compared with each other using paired samples t-test.

Tracheal Resection and Mucociliary Clearance
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1976Mucociliary transport following tracheal resection and end-to-end anastomosis was evaluated in beagle dogs, using the movement of 99MTC labeled sodium pertechnetate solution as a marker. Preoperatively, mucociliary clearance was stable, but a three-fold decrease in tracheal mucus movement was found three days postoperatively.

Theophylline and mucociliary clearance
Chest, 1987Abnormal mucociliary transport is improvement by the action of theophylline, and this effect can be attributed to several mechanisms. The drug may directly and indirectly mediate the increase in the secretory output of bronchial glands, and this effect is enhanced by the vagal gastropulmonary reflex which is stimulated by the irritant action of ...

Myrtol standardized affects mucociliary clearance
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology, 2016BackgroundMyrtol standardized (Gelomyrtol forte) has been shown to be effective in controlling nasal symptoms of rhinosinusitis by promoting mucociliary clearance. Our aim was to evaluate the short‐ and long‐term effects of myrtol on ciliated columnar cells and goblet cells in an in‐vitro setting.MethodsNasal epithelial cells were harvested (42 days ...

Mucociliary clearance in cystic fibrosis
Pediatric Pulmonology, 2002AbstractAbnormal mucociliary clearance (MCC) is one of the central hypotheses for the development of lung disease in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). However, attempts to demonstrate this decrease of MCC in vivo have proved to be somewhat less definitive, with the evidence barely favoring impaired clearance.

Nasal mucociliary clearance and salmeterol
Clinical Otolaryngology and Allied Sciences, 1997In vitro studies have suggested that beta 2-adrenergic agents increase the ciliary beat frequency in human respiratory epithelium. We carried out a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effects of a topical spray, salmeterol, on nasal mucociliary clearance using the saccharin test.
