Counterion density profiles at charged flexible membranes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Counterion distributions at charged soft membranes are studied using perturbative analytical and simulation methods in both weak coupling (mean-field or Poisson-Boltzmann) and strong coupling limits. The softer the membrane, the more smeared out the counterion density profile becomes and counterions pentrate through the mean-membrane surface location ...

Scalable fabrication of bijel films via continuous flow slit-coating [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Nanocomposite membranes are an emerging filtration material in the production of clean water. Recently, the fabrication of porous nanocomposite membranes via solvent transfer induced phase separation (STrIPS) was introduced. During STrIPS, the phase separation of two immiscible liquids is arrested by the attachment of nanoparticles at the liquid-liquid

Molecular diagnosis of anti-laminin 332 (epiligrin) mucous membrane pemphigoid

open access: yesOrphanet Journal of Rare Diseases, 2018
BackgroundMucous membrane pemphigoid is a group of chronic subepithelial autoimmune blistering diseases that mainly affect mucous membranes. Laminin 332-specific autoantibodies are present in approximately 1/3 of the patients, being associated with an ...

“Therapies Through Gut:” Targeted Drug Delivery for Non‐Gastrointestinal Diseases by Oral Administration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of the mechanism of targeted delivery of nanoparticles including 1) paracellular, 2) endolysosomal escape, 3) receptor mediated endocytosis, and 4) M cell mediated transport for non‐GI diseases by oral administration such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, and brain diseases. Abstract Oral drug delivery is a promising approach

Lateral phase separation of confined membranes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We consider membranes interacting via short, intermediate and long stickers. The effects of the intermediate stickers on the lateral phase separation of the membranes are studied via mean-field approximation. The critical potential depth of the stickers increases in the presence of the intermediate sticker.

A Bio‐Inspired Perspective on Materials Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective discusses natural materials as inspiration for sustainable engineering designs and the processing of materials. First, circularity, longevity, parsimony, and activity are presented as essential material paradigms. The perspective then uses many examples of natural and technical materials to introduce principles such as oligo ...
