Reproductive biology of largescaled mullet, Parachelon grandisquamis (Actinopterygii: Mugiliformes: Mugilidae), in the Marine Protected Area of Niamone–Kalounayes (Casamance estuary, Senegal) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2023
In Senegal, studies on the family Mugilidae are rare and little data is available on their reproductive biology. This study, carried out in the MPA of Niamone–Kalounayes (Casamance River estuary, Senegal) aims to enhance our knowledge of the reproductive

DNA barcoding the ichthyofauna of the Beibu Gulf: Implications for fisheries management in a seafood market hub

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 12, December 2023., 2023
The fish fauna of the beibu gulf, one of the largest sea food hubs in Southeast Asia, is characterized here by DNA barcoding. The 1080 DNA barcodes analyzed show concordance between morphological identifications and DNA‐based species delimitation. Lower level of diversity detected here compared to historical observations is concordant with the stock ...

Diet of the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) in North Carolina using 2 methods

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 47, Issue 4, December 2023., 2023
River otters (Lontra canadensis) are key predators in North Carolina's aquatic systems; however, they are often seen as competitors by trout fishermen and fish hatcheries. We conducted necropsies and analyzed the stomach contents using the standard observational methods and metabarcoding DNA analysis.

Insights into the diet and trophic ecology of white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) gained through DNA metabarcoding analyses of cloacal swabs

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 5, Issue 6, Page 1362-1377, November 2023., 2023
This study explores the diet of one of the world's most recognizable predators, the white shark. Dietary assessments are performed by genomic analysis of cloacal swabs collected from approximately 200 live sharks. Findings from this study provide insights into the trophic ecology and feeding behavior of the white shark and key marine resources ...

Contrasting metacommunity patterns of fish and aquatic insects in drainage ditches of paddy fields

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 37, Issue 5, Page 635-646, September 2022., 2022
Fish metacommunities were mainly influenced by local environmental factors in summer, and by watercourse‐based spatial factors in spring and autumn, as hydrological connectivity among habitats improves in the summer. In contrast, only overland‐based spatial factors significantly affected metacommunity structures of aquatic insects with flying adults in

Taxonomic Note on Ellochelon vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) (Mugilidae: Mugiliformes) from West New Guinea, Indonesia [PDF]

open access: yesTrends in Sciences, 2022
Abstract                 Ellochelon vaigiensis is a monotypic, catadromous, and widespread species throughout Indo-Pacific region. Taxonomy of the species is ancient and somewhat confused by morphological resemblance.  Here, we present and compare the morphological characteristics of E. vaigiensis from 3 distinct areas, respectively from the type

Contributions to the Taxonomy of the Mugilid Genus Moolgarda Whitley (Teleostei: Mugilidae), with Redescriptions of M. crenilabis, M. seheli and M. tade from the Red Sea

open access: yesDiversity
The taxonomy of the family Mugilidae has historically posed challenges, marked by discrepancies between described and valid species, compounded by cryptic diversity and a similar external appearance.

Primer Length in Reverse Transcription Determines Biodiversity Recovery and Reproducibility in eRNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Primer length for reverse transcription significantly affects eRNA‐based biodiversity recovery and community structure. Shorter primers, particularly N4 and N5, in random priming and medium‐length primers, particularly T20, in oligo(dT) priming demonstrate superior performance, especially in detecting the rare biosphere.
