Systematics of the grey mullets (Teleostei: Mugiliformes: Mugilidae): Molecular phylogenetic evidence challenges two centuries of morphology-based taxonomy

open access: yesMolecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2012
The family Mugilidae comprises mainly coastal marine species that are widely distributed in all tropical, subtropical and temperate seas. Mugilid species are generally considered to be ecologically important and they are a major food resource for human populations in certain parts of the world.

Decoding the complexities of the Dongjiang River basin fish community: Structure and functional traits using environmental DNA metabarcoding approaches

open access: yesHeliyon
Fish play an important role in preserving global aquatic biodiversity and delivering ecosystem services. They are the focus of aquatic ecological research. Using environmental DNA (eDNA), we reported the diversity and structure of fish assemblages in the

Karyotype characterization of Mugil incilis Hancock, 1830 (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae), including a description of an unusual co-localization of major and minor ribosomal genes in the family

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
This study reports the description of the karyotype of Mugil incilis from Venezuela. The chromosome complement is composed of 48 acrocentric chromosomes, which uniformly decrease in size.

The genome sequence of the Thicklip grey mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso, 1827) (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae)

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
We present a genome assembly from an individual Chelon labrosus (Thicklip grey mullet; Chordata; Actinopteri; Mugiliformes; Mugilidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 717.40 megabases. Most of the assembly (96.63%) is scaffolded into 24 chromosomal pseudomolecules.

A list of type specimens of fishes in the Zoological Museum, University of Amsterdam. 1. Order Mugiliformes

open access: yes, 1960
In the earlier days the cataloguing and labeling of type specimens was rather careless, mostly with no mention that they were types. What we now term ’holotypes’ were previously referred to merely as ’types’, and both ’syntypes’ and ’paratypes’ were called ’cotypes’.

Stomach content analysis of Mugil cephalus and Mugil curema (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) with emphasis on diatoms in the Tamiahua lagoon, México.

open access: yesRevista de biologia tropical, 2002
A year-long research on the Mugil cephalus and M. curema diet was conducted. The food content in the cardiac portion of 192 stomachs revealed a great similarity in both species leading to two conclusions: sediments are their basic food and high levels of benthic diatoms are dominant.
