A folded conformation of MukBEF and cohesin [PDF]

open access: yesNature Structural and Molecular Biology, 2019
Structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC)-kleisin complexes organize chromosomal DNAs in all domains of life, with key roles in chromosome segregation, DNA repair and regulation of gene expression.

Mechanics of DNA bridging by bacterial condensin MukBEF in vitro and in singulo [PDF]

open access: yesEMBO Journal, 2010
Structural maintenance of chromosome (SMC) proteins comprise the core of several specialized complexes that stabilize the global architecture of the chromosomes by dynamically linking distant DNA fragments. This reaction however remains poorly understood giving rise to numerous proposed mechanisms of the proteins.

Chromosome Condensation in the Absence of the Non-SMC Subunits of MukBEF [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 2006
ABSTRACTMukBEF is a bacterial SMC (structural maintenance of chromosome) complex required for chromosome partitioning inEscherichia coli. We report that overproduction of MukBEF results in marked chromosome condensation. This condensation is rapid and precedes the effects of overproduction on macromolecular synthesis.

MukBEF on the march: taking over chromosome organization in bacteria? [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, 2011
SummarySmc–ScpAB complexes, also called bacterial condensin, are comprised of highly conserved proteins present in a wide variety of bacteria and archaea. They facilitate bacterial chromosome segregation probably by organizing and/or compacting nascent sister chromosomes.

The Escherichia coli SMC Complex, MukBEF, Shapes Nucleoid Organization Independently of DNA Replication [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 2012
ABSTRACTSMC (structuralmaintenance ofchromosomes) complexes function ubiquitously in organizing and maintaining chromosomes. Functional fluorescent derivatives of theEscherichia coliSMC complex, MukBEF, form foci that associate with the replication origin region (ori).

The Bacterial Condensin MukBEF Compacts DNA into a Repetitive, Stable Structure

Science, 2004
Condensins are conserved proteins containing SMC (structural maintenance of chromosomes) moieties that organize and compact chromosomes in an unknown mechanism essential for faithful chromosome partitioning. We show that MukBEF, the condensin in Escherichia coli , cooperatively compacts a single DNA molecule into a ...

Novobiocin Susceptibility of MukBEF-Deficient Escherichia coli Is Combinatorial with Efflux and Resides in DNA Topoisomerases [PDF]

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 2016
ABSTRACT Condensins play a key role in the global organization of bacterial chromosomes. In Escherichia coli , the inactivation of its sole condensin MukBEF induces severe growth defects and renders cells hypersusceptible to novobiocin.
