Cortical oscillations in auditory perception and speech: evidence for two temporal windows in human auditory cortex

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2012
Natural sounds, including vocal communication sounds, contain critical information at multiple time scales. Two essential temporal modulation rates in speech have been argued to be in the low gamma band (~20-80 ms duration information) and the theta band

Multi-band carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation for VLC: An overview [PDF]

open access: yes2017 First South American Colloquium on Visible Light Communications (SACVLC), 2017
The rapid development of solid-state lighting technologies has been the stimulus for visible light communications (VLC) to be the focus of enormous interest over the last decade. The key feature of simultaneous data transmission and illumination using white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) makes VLC a potential candidate for future power efficient ...

Interband heating processes in a periodically driven optical lattice

open access: yes, 2016
We investigate multi-"photon" interband excitation processes in an optical lattice that is driven periodically in time by a modulation of the lattice depth.

Strength through diversity: how cancers thrive when clones cooperate

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Intratumor heterogeneity can offer direct benefits to the tumor through cooperation between different clones. In this review, Kuiken et al. discuss existing evidence for clonal cooperativity to identify overarching principles, and highlight how novel technological developments could address remaining open questions.

Multi-level pulse position modulation scheme for enhancing link capacity in electromagnetic nanocommunication networks

open access: yesICT Express, 2022
In this letter, a new nanocommunication modulation scheme termed multi-level pulse position modulation (ML-PPM) is proposed. The ML-PPM approach will boost the link capacity of a nanocommunication system while achieving a processing gain in reception ...

LDAcoop: Integrating non‐linear population dynamics into the analysis of clonogenic growth in vitro

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Limiting dilution assays (LDAs) quantify clonogenic growth by seeding serial dilutions of cells and scoring wells for colony formation. The fraction of negative wells is plotted against cells seeded and analyzed using the non‐linear modeling of LDAcoop.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

A Mid-Infrared Perfect Metasurface Absorber with Tri-Band Broadband Scalability

open access: yesNanomaterials
Metasurfaces have emerged as a unique group of two-dimensional ultra-compact subwavelength devices for perfect wave absorption due to their exceptional capabilities of light modulation. Nonetheless, achieving high absorption, particularly with multi-band

Multi-band carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation for bandlimited visible light communications systems [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Wireless Communications, 2015
Visible light communications is a technology with enormous potential for a wide range of applications within next generation transmission and broadcasting technologies. VLC offers simultaneous illumination and data communications by intensity modulating the optical power emitted by LEDs operating in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum ...

Structure analysis of two-dimensional nonlinear self-trapped photonic lattices in anisotropic photorefractive media

open access: yes, 2006
We generate experimentally different types of two-dimensional self-trapped photonic lattices in a photorefractive medium and analyze the induced refractive index change using two different methods.
