Multi-material compliant mechanisms for mobile millirobots

2011 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2011
This paper describes a new process for fabricating planar, multi-material, compliant mechanisms, intended for use in small scale robotics. The process involves laser cutting the mechanism geometry from a rigid material, and refilling the joint areas with a second, elastomeric material.

Parallel, Multi‐Material Electrohydrodynamic 3D Nanoprinting

Small, 2020
AbstractDirect mass‐transfer via liquid nanodroplets is one of the most powerful approaches for additive micro/nanofabrication. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) dispensing has made the delivery of nanosized droplets containing diverse materials a practical reality; however, in its serial form it has insufficient throughput for large‐area processing.

Multi-Material Ultrasonic Consolidation

2006
Ultrasonic consolidation (UC) is a recently developed direct metal solid freeform fabrication process. While the process has been well-demonstrated for part fabrication in Al alloy 3003 H18, including with intricate cooling channels, some of the potential strengths of the process have not been fully exploited.

Adaptive methods for multi‐material ALE hydrodynamics

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, 2010
AbstractArbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) methods are commonly used for challenging problems in hydrodynamics. Among the most challenging matters are the approximations in the presence of multiple materials. The ALE code ALEGRA has used a constant volume method for computing the impact of multiple materials on both the Lagrangian step and the remap ...

A multi-material milli-robot prototyping process

2009 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2009
Photo-patternable adhesives and silicones are introduced for use in centimeter-scale robotics. Traditional approaches to making robots at this size scale require the use of expensive start-up equipment and/or precise machining, and generally yield fragile and costly robots in small numbers.

An effective method for multi-material part design

International Journal of Computer Applications in Technology, 2008
Injection moulding is the most commercially important of all plastic processing methods. In recent years, multi-material over-moulding has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the injection moulding industry mainly due to its in-mould assembly and in-mould decoration features.

Perspectives on Multi‐Material Craft in Basic Education

International Journal of Art & Design Education, 2019
AbstractIn Finland, the National Core Curriculum for basic education from 2014 discusses holistic and multi‐material craft, which includes technical work and textile work aiming to break down the gender‐based tradition in craft education. However, teachers have been confused about the concept of multi‐materiality; it has raised tension between textile ...
