Analyzing Archive Transit Multibeam Data for Nodule Occurrences

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
We show that analyzing archived and future multibeam backscatter and bathymetry data, in tandem with regional environmental parameters, can help to identify polymetallic nodule fields in the world’s oceans.

A Numerical Study of the Effects of Density Contrast on Flow, Turbulence, and Mixing at the Negro/Solimoes Confluence, Brazil

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Eddy‐resolving numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effects of density contrast between the confluent flows on hydrodynamics, coherent structures and mixing downstream of the confluence between the Negro and Solimões Rivers, Brazil, which is characterized by both a large discharge (>100,000 m3/s) and a large aspect‐ratio (W/D

Electrons and X‐rays for diffraction and imaging

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section D, Volume 82, Issue 5, Page 446-456, May 2026.
The use of X‐rays and electrons for diffraction and imaging of soft biological samples is compared.A comparison is provided between the use of electrons and X‐rays for collecting diffraction data from small protein crystals and imaging data from cells and tissues.

Geometric and Radiometric Correction of Multibeam Backscatter Derived from Reson 8101 Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
A common by-product of multibeam surveys is a measure of the backscattered acoustic intensity from the seafloor. These data are of immense interest to geologists and geoscientists since maps of the acoustic backscatter strength can be used to infer ...

Multibeam Wideband Transmit Beamforming Using 2D Sparse FIR Trapezoidal Filters

open access: yesJournal of Low Power Electronics and Applications
A low-complexity multibeam wideband transmit beamformer using a 2D sparse FIR filter design capable of multiple beams is proposed as a digital building block for fully digital beamformers.

A Suite of Field Manuals for Marine Sampling to Monitor Australian Waters

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
One of the main challenges in assessing marine biodiversity is the lack of consistent approaches to monitor it. This threatens to undermine ocean best practice in marine monitoring, as it impedes a reduction in the bias and variance of sampled data and ...

Subsidence of Artificial Reefs with Bamboo Foundations on a Soft Seabed

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The design of artificial reefs must be based on the criteria of both durability and serviceability. In this respect, the seabed subsidence rate related to the weight of the reefs and of their foundation system should be limited.

Providing the Third Dimension: High-resolution Multibeam Sonar as a Tool for Archaeological Investigations - An Example from the D-day Beaches of Normandy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In general, marine archaeological investigations begin in the archives, using historic maps, coast surveys, and other materials, to define submerged areas suspected to contain potentially significant historical sites.

Water-Column Variability Assessment for Underway Profilers to Improve Efficiency and Accuracy of Multibeam Surveys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
With the advent of underway profilers, sampling the water-column to obtain sound speed corrections is no longer a detriment to hydrographic survey efficiency.
