Multilevel Converters: Fundamental Circuits and Systems

Proceedings of the IEEE, 2017
This paper provides a chronological overview of the topology for multilevel converters, and discusses their different terminology usages and characteristics. The multilevel converters include three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) and neutral-point-piloted (NPP) inverters, three-level and four-level flying-capacitor (FLC) inverters, and a family of ...

Introduction to Multilevel Converters

2014
Multilevel converters have found an important position among applications as high-power converters. Also, they are widely used in renewable energy sources where multilevel converters appear as a link between renewable sources, such as wind, fuel cells, photovoltaic modules from one side and high-power loads from the other side.

Multilevel converter for excitation of underwater transducers

2015 International Conference on Advances in Computing, Communications and Informatics (ICACCI), 2015
In this paper, a switch mode multilevel Power Amplifier (PA) system for driving underwater electro acoustic transducer is presented. This Switch Mode Power Amplifier (SMPA) can replace linear PA in the frequency range above 10 kHz and less than 200 kHz.

An optimization approach for modulation in multilevel converters

IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2016
In the control of power converters, it is well known that the modulation strategy can be used not only for the discretization of averaged control signals, but also for the fulfillment of additional control objectives, such as voltage balance among capacitors or common mode reduction.

Impedance modeling of modular multilevel converters

IECON 2015 - 41st Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2015
The impedance modeling of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) is a prerequisite for applying the impedance-based stability analysis method to an MMC-based high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) transmission system. The objective of this paper is to develop impedance models of a three-phase MMC in order to assess its stability.

Capacitor monitoring for modular multilevel converters

IECON 2017 - 43rd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2017
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is attractive for medium-or high-power applications because of the advantages of its high modularity, availability, and high power quality. Reliability is one of the most important challenges for the MMC consisting of a large number of submodules (SMs).

Multilevel converter for X-ray generators

IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2016
Power supplies for medical X-ray applications must be designed to operate under very different conditions. The converter must be designed to deliver the maximum required power, which usually results in poor efficiency at low power levels. A new multilevel structure is proposed to minimize this problem.

The delta configured modular multilevel converter

2016 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2016
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become an attractive option for dc/ac conversion in many power system applications, in particular, for HVDC transmission. Due to its parallel arrangement of phase legs, the MMC is known to be a wye-configured architecture.

Dynamic Analysis of Modular Multilevel Converters

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2013
Theory for the dynamics of modular multilevel converters is developed in this paper. It is shown that the sum capacitor voltage in each arm often can be considered instead of the individual capacitor voltages, thereby significantly reducing the complexity of the system model.

Capacitor selection for modular multilevel converter

2014 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2014
Submodule (SM) capacitor is a key component in a modular multilevel converter (MMC), the selection of which must consider the component’s specifications and the requirements of the targeted converter application. This paper focuses on the capacitor selection for MMCs in applications including high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission and static ...
