Through the Sands of Time: Evolutionary History and Systematics of the Awl‐Headed Snakes (Colubridae: Lytorhynchus) in the Saharo‐Sindian Region

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The psammophilous colubrid genus Lytorhynchus is widely distributed in the deserts of the Saharo‐Sindian region and adjacent areas. The taxonomy of the genus and the number of recognised species have remained unstable since the last taxonomic revision in 1970, with differing views on the taxonomic status of L. gaddi and L. kennedyi.

Divergence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato spirochetes could be driven by the host: diversity of Borrelia strains isolated from ticks feeding on a single bird

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2014
Background The controversy surrounding the potential impact of birds in spirochete transmission dynamics and their capacity to serve as a reservoir has existed for a long time.

Is it time to revise the nomenclature of Leishmania?

open access: yes, 2010
Leishmania is notable for a large number of described species. Molecular phylogenies of Leishmania have increasingly suggested that the number of species could be too large.

The African Mole‐Rat Genus Cryptomys and Its Species: Distinct in Their Genes and Habitats

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, EarlyView.
ABSTRACTThe African mole‐rat genus Cryptomys comprises five morphologically cryptic lineages distributed across South Africa and in Zimbabwe, historically treated as subspecies of C. hottentotus (C. h. hottentotus, C. h. mahali, C. h. natalensis, C. h. pretoriae and C. h. nimrodi).

Systematic and Taxonomic Revision of Ostrea stentina Species Complex (Bivalvia: Ostreidae): New Insights From a Topotype‐Based Integrative Approach

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Cryptic marine species complexes with plastic morphology, shallow divergence, and broad distributions are among the hardest taxonomic problems in zoology. The Ostrea stentina complex, reported across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indo‐Pacific, is a striking example. We present the first topotype‐anchored integrative revision of this complex,

Multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis of the swine dysentery pathogen, Brachyspira hyodysenteriae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The spirochete Brachyspira hyodysenteriae is the causative agent of swine dysentery, a severe colonic infection of pigs that has a considerable economic impact in many swine-producing countries.

Prevalence and Genetic Diversity of Clinical Vibrio parahaemolyticus Isolates from China, Revealed by Multilocus Sequence Typing Scheme

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2015
The population structure of clinical Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates spreading in China remains undefined. We brought 218 clinical isolates from the pubMLST database originating from different regions of China collected since the year of 1990, analyzed ...

Population structure and species description of aquatic Sphingomonadaceae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Prokaryotes consist of the domains of Bacteria and Archaea and exist since approximately 3.8 billion years. Prokaryotes, despite the small size of the individual cells, are regarded to represent the 'unseen majority' among the living world as they occur ...
