Fairness of adaptive multimedia applications

ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. Conference Record. Affiliated with SUPERCOMM'98 (Cat. No.98CH36220), 2002
We present a scalable scheme called the direct adjustment algorithm (DAA) for adapting the transmission rate of multimedia applications to the congestion level of the network. The DAA is based on the end-to-end real time transport protocol (RTP). Results achieved through simulations and measurements suggest the efficiency of the scheme in utilizing the

Peer-to-peer multimedia applications

Proceedings of the 14th ACM international conference on Multimedia, 2006
In both academia and industry, peer-to-peer (P2P) applications have attracted great attention. Peer-to-peer file sharing applications, such as Napster, Gnutella, Kazaa, BitTorrent, Skype and PPLive, have witnessed tremendous success among end users.

Programming Multimedia Applications in GStreamer

Proceedings of the 22nd Brazilian Symposium on Multimedia and the Web, 2016
This short course is an introduction to GStreamer, one of the main free/open-source frameworks for multimedia processing. We start presenting GStreamer, its architecture and the dataflow programming model, and then adopt a hands-on approach. Starting with an example, a simple video player, we introduce each concept of GStreamer's basic C API and ...

Multimedia IoT systems and applications

2017 Global Internet of Things Summit (GIoTS), 2017
A wide spectrum of applications based on Internet of things (IoTs) are recently emerging and have drawn considerable attention. IoT-based multimedia (IoTMM) applications have received relatively less attention. This article provides a review of the field of mobile IoTMM systems; it assesses the state of the art and then discusses some active areas of ...

Speaker verification for multimedia application

2004 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37583), 2005
In this paper the possibilities of modern speaker verification systems have been described. One of the most important tasks is a proper definition of feature vectors. The long-term spectra vector has been chosen as the background for text-independent verification system.

An electronic nose for multimedia applications

IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 2003
Multimedia systems are widely used in consumer electronics environments today, where humans can work and communicate through multi-sensory interfaces. Unfortunately smell detection and generation systems are not part of today's multimedia systems. In this paper, we propose an electronic nose that can be used in a multimedia environment.

Distributed multimedia applications: A review

Computer Communications, 1994
The arrival of distributed multimedia technology has the potential both to create new application areas and augment those that already exist. However; to achieve this potential system developers must fully understand the nature of multimedia information systems and the mechanisms necessary for such systems to operate successfully.

Content control in multimedia applications

CHI '01 Extended Abstracts on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2001
Increasingly expressive input and information presentation techniques are said to enhance interactivity. This paper argues that increased interactivity alone is not sufficient. Though in many cases it may allow more flexible or efficient methods for conveying users' needs, it is often true that a range of retrieved information is obtained from which ...

A SMART scheduler for multimedia applications

ACM Transactions on Computer Systems, 2003
Real-time applications such as multimedia audio and video are increasingly populating the workstation desktop. To support the execution of these applications in conjunction with traditional non-real-time applications, we have created SMART, a Scheduler for Multimedia And Real-Time applications.

Multimodal interaction in multimedia applications

Proceedings of First Signal Processing Society Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing, 2002
Multimedia utilizes may different channels to convey information to a user. For an optimum interaction these channels must be coordinated in a clear and informative way. Research has produced several rules-of-thumb which facilitate this process.
