Low-Cost High-Sensitivity Strain and Temperature Sensing Using Graded-Index Multimode Fibers [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2007
We report a low-loss, low-cost high-sensitivity all-fiber strain and temperature sensor based on mode interference in graded-index multimode fibers. Blueshifts with strain and temperature sensitivities of 18.6 pm/microstrain and 58.5 pm/°C have been ...

Simultaneous Measurement for Strain and Temperature Using Fiber Bragg Gratings and Multimode Fibers [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2008
An all-fiber sensor capable of simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain is newly presented. The sensing head is formed by a fiber Bragg grating combined with a section of multimode fiber that acts as a Mach-Zehnder interferometer for ...

Learning and Avoiding Disorder in Multimode Fibers

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2021
Multimode optical fibers (MMFs) have gained renewed interest in the past decade, emerging as a way to boost optical communication data rates in the context of an expected saturation of current single-mode fiber-based networks.

Spatial Beam Cleaning in Multimode GRIN Fibers: Polarization Effects

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2023
The beam self-cleaning effect in graded-index multimode optical fibers has several interesting potential applications, such as high-resolution nonlinear imaging and mode-locked fiber lasers. Most experimental and theoretical studies of beam self-cleaning

Highly multimode solitons in step-index optical fiber

open access: yesAPL Photonics, 2023
We report the generation of multimode solitons in step-index fibers. The solitons are superpositions of 5–10 temporally aligned transverse modes, they exhibit speckled beam profiles, and the spatio-spectral variation across the soliton can be complex.

Theoretical Investigation of the Capacity of Space Division Multiplexing with Multimode Step-Index Air-Clad Silica Optical Fibers

open access: yesPhotonics, 2022
We studied the effect of mode coupling on the space division multiplexing (SDM) capabilities of multimode step-index (SI) air-clad silica optical fibers by numerically solving the power flow equation.

Nonlinear Multimode Fiber Optics [PDF]

open access: yesConference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 2018
We overview recent advances in the nonlinear optics of multimode optical fibers, including ultrabroadband sideband and supercontinuum generation, Kerr and Raman beam cleanup, modal modulation instabilities, four wave mixing, and second harmonic beam cleaning.

Thermalization of light waves in multimode optical fibers: Negative temperatures equilibrium states and the role of disorder - INVITED [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2023
Nonlinear random waves exhibit a phenomenon of irreversible thermalization, in analogy with the thermalization of a classical gas system. This irreversible process of thermalization to the Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium distribution has been recently ...

Broadband multimode fiber spectrometer [PDF]

open access: yesOptics Letters, 2016
A general-purpose all-fiber spectrometer is demonstrated to overcome the trade-off between spectral resolution and bandwidth. By integrating a wavelength division multiplexer with five multimode optical fibers, we have achieved 100 nm bandwidth with 0.03 nm resolution at wavelength 1500 nm.
