Self-guiding multimode interference threshold switch

Optics Letters, 2000
We propose a new passive optical thresholding device that combines the principles of multimode interference (MMI) with self-guiding. The multimode region is composed of a nonlinear optical material that will support a self-guided beam (i.e., a material with a positive Kerr nonlinearity).

Multimode interference spectrometer

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
Designs and simulations for a class of integrated photonic lightwave circuit spectrometers with low manufacturing tolerance are presented. The designs are applicable to all material platforms, including, but not limited to, silicon, glass, polymer, sol-gel, and gallium arsenide.

Multimode interference in sensor applications

SPIE Proceedings, 2015
In the paper is presented a numerical analysis of optical sensors based on gradient index multimode interference structures (MMI) made by sodium-potassium ion exchange is presented. Variations of external propagation conditions change the mode properties and as a result the modal fields interference pattern and the signal distribution at the output ...

Multimode interference bistable laser diode

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2003
We propose a novel bistable laser diode (BLD) with active multimode interference (MMI) cavity. Bistable switching can be realized between two cross-coupled modes by means of gain saturation. Static characteristics of the multimode interference (MMI)-BLD are analyzed using a finite-difference beam propagation method.

Ultracompact multimode interference waveguide devices

Proceedings of LEOS '93, 2002
Coupling, branching and routing devices are key components for photonic integrated circuits. This paper discusses multimode interference and self-imaging and shows how this effect has created a new class of low-loss, ultracompact and fabrication tolerant routing devices. >

Universal Optics with Programmable Multimode Interference

Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science 2021, 2021
We show that multimode interference programmable optics benefit from the simple algorithmic construction and length scaling of state-of-the-art programmable pho- tonic circuits, while featuring orders of magnitude reductions in width and losses.

STRIPE-LOADED MULTIMODE INTERFERENCE COUPLERS

Integrated Photonics Research, 1995
The use of multimode interference (MMI) rib waveguides as couplers/recombiners in passive and active photonic applications has become well established 1,2 and leads to a number of advantages over conventional Y-junction and directional couplers, such as lower losses and shorter propagation lengths.

Multimode interference photonic switches (MIPS)

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2002
The switching characteristics of multimode interference photonic switches (MIPS) are analyzed by wide-angle finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM). As a result, it is found that the MIPS with a multimode interference (MMI) length of 599 /spl mu/m can switch the output light polarization insensitively with a crosstalk of less than -20 dB for

Multimode Interference in Plasmonic Metamaterials

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2017
We studied multimode interference effect in a metamaterial constructed by silver nanorod pair arrays. Dipole electric resonance (ER), quadrupole magnetic resonance (MR), and Rayleigh anomaly (RA) are supported in this structure. Interference effect between either two modes is analyzed.

Multimode interference coupled array laser

2009 High Power Diode Lasers and Systems Conference, 2009
We have successfully demonstrated 1×4 MMI array laser diode which is locked in phase achieving power in excess of 400 mW from a single mode output waveguide with slope efficiency of 20 % per facet. Far field measured at FWHM being 16.1° at 418 mW and remained single lobed as the drive current was increased.
