Source Coding for Multiple Descriptions

Bell System Technical Journal, 1980
This paper discusses an idealization of the situation in which it is required to send information over two separate channels, as in a packet communication network, and it is desired to recover as much as possible of the original information should one of the channels break down.

Multiple description trellis coded quantization

Proceedings 1998 International Conference on Image Processing. ICIP98 (Cat. No.98CB36269), 1999
Summary: The authors present a construction of multiple description trellis-coded quantizers. They use the tensor product of trellises to build a trellis that is applicable to multiple description coding. The problems of index assignment and set partitioning for the resulting trellis are considered.

Multiple description subband coding

Proceedings 1998 International Conference on Image Processing. ICIP98 (Cat. No.98CB36269), 2002
Multiple description coding (MDC) is a technique used to obtain two or more (often correlated) descriptions of a source, which are transmitted over different channels to the receiver. These descriptions of the source support two levels of reconstruction quality.

Multiple description coding with polar codes

2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC), 2014
The use of multiple descriptions (MD) provides a reliable communications solution over packet loss channels; the polar source coding (PC) takes advantage of reasonable complexities in both the encoder and decoder sides. In this paper, a polar multiple description coding is introduced for the binary input sequence with Hamming distortion in which the ...

Multiple descriptions based wavelet image coding

Proceedings of the 8th International Scientific and Practical Conference of Students, Post-graduates and Young Scientists. Modern Technique and Technologies. MTT'2002 (Cat. No.02EX550), 2004
We present a simple and efficient scheme that combines multiple descriptions coding with wavelet transform under JPEG2000 image coding architecture. To reduce packet losses, controlled amounts of redundancy are added to the wavelet transform coefficients to produce multiple descriptions of wavelet coefficients during the compression process to produce ...

Multiple description coding based on LDGM codes

2009 IEEE Information Theory Workshop, 2009
This work addresses practical multiple description coding for uniform binary sources in the no excess sum-rate case. For this case Zhang and Berger have shown that the EGC∗ region defined by El Gamal and Cover coincides with a portion of the boundary of the MD rate-distortion region, and proposed a construction of the auxiliary variables U and V to ...

Multiple description coding using trellis coded quantization

Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. No.00CH37101), 2002
Multiple description coding is posed as a source coding problem that uses diversity to overcome channel impairments. In this paper, we use trellis coded quantization (TCQ) to obtain granular gain over the multiple description scalar quantizer. Several algorithms are proposed, aiming for different level of channel reliability.
