Network adaptive multiple description coding for JPEG2000

IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005, 2005
Despite multiple description coding (MDC) paradigm is effective to combat packet losses on networks, it is not included in any multimedia co-decoding standard. This can be justified by the complexity of the redundancy tuning task of many of the proposed methods.

Rainbow Network Flow of Multiple Description Codes

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2008
Summary: This paper is an enquiry into the interaction between multiple description coding (MDC) and network routing. We are mainly concerned with rate-distortion optimized network flow of a multiple description (MD) source from multiple servers to multiple sinks.

A turbo-coded multiple-description system for multiple antennas

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2004
We propose a joint source-channel coding scheme for wireless communication systems with multiple transmit and receive antennas. The source coder is realized by a multiple description encoder that generates multiple bit streams for the same source. Each description is then separately turbo coded and transmitted using multiple antennas. For the receiver,

Multiple description for robust Scalable Video Coding

2009 16th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2009
Scalable Video Coding (SVC) was recently standardized as an extension of the H.264/AVC standard. A scalable coder allows to combine different layers of spatial, temporal and quality scalability, and is a viable solution for adaptation to user characteristics and network conditions.

Tessellation Based Multiple Description Coding

2005
A novel multiple description coding framework, Tessellation Based Multiple Description Coding (TMDC), is proposed in this paper. In this work, we first decompose each wavelet coefficient into two parts by bit-wise-down sampling, generating odd and even wavelet transformed images.

Space-time multiple description video coding

SPIE Proceedings, 2006
This paper develops a combined space-time multiple description video coding (ST-MDVC) scheme and corresponding error concealment methods in order to adapt to error prone packet networks, especially for multiple channels. It generates four descriptions, instead of two in most other MDVC schemes, with much lower redundancy than others.

Distortion exponent for multiple description coding

2009 47th Annual Allerton Conference on Communication, Control, and Computing (Allerton), 2009
Distortion exponent has been proposed as performance measure to characterize how fast the average distortion decays to zero when the SNR increases to infinity. The distortion exponent for Multiple Description Coding (MDC) has only been investigated for two descriptions and symmetric SNR. In this paper, we consider the case of any number of descriptions

Fully scalable multiple description image coding

2009 IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing, 2009
In this paper a novel scheme that incorporates both quality and resolution scalability within the multiple description coding (MDC) framework is presented. Different resolution descriptions are created by using several multiple description scalar quantizers (MDSQ) concept in different wavelet decomposition levels and the quality scalability is achieved

Multiple description speech coding with diversities

IEEE International Conference on Acoustics Speech and Signal Processing, 2002
Multiple description coding (MDC) allows management of tradeoff in achievable rate-distortion performance among various components in a processing (coding-decoding) system or channels in a transmission scheme. Current MDC methods first fix performance of the central decoder at a conventional single description (SD) level.
