Multiple solutions of positively homogeneous equations [PDF]

open access: possibleNonlinear Analysis: Theory, Methods & Applications, 2002
where h :R → RN is a continuous and T -periodic function, v is a vector to be 5xed, ; are real numbers and A is a symmetric N × N matrix. Given u∈RN ; we write u= u+ − u−; where u+ denotes the vector whose components are the positive parts of those of u; and similarly for u−: This kind of systems appear, e.g.

On multiple solutions for Berman's problem

Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Section A Mathematics, 1992
SynopsisWe study Berman's problemsubjects to the conditions f(0) =f″(0) = f′(1) = f(1)− 1 = 0, which arises from the study of laminar flows in channels with porous walls. Positive (negative) Re denotes the case of suction (injection) flows. Preliminary numerical studies indicated the existence of three different types of solutions and a small portion ...

Solutions and multiple solutions for problems with the p-Laplacian

Monatshefte für Mathematik, 2007
In this paper we consider two nonlinear elliptic problems driven by the p-Laplacian and having a nonsmooth potential (hemivariational inequalities). The first is an eigenvalue problem and we prove that if the parameter ? < ?2 = the second eigenvalue of the p-Laplacian, then there exists a nontrivial smooth solution.

Do Multiple Solutions Matter? Prompting Multiple Solutions, Interest, Competence, and Autonomy

Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2014
Encouraging students to develop multiple solutions for given problems is an important way to improve mathematical knowledge. However, the influence of this teaching element on students' interest-related motivational orientations is an open question.

Multiplicative Representations of Solutions [PDF]

open access: possible, 2013
In this chapter we suggest a representation for solutions of differential delay equations via multiplicative operator integrals.

The Value of Multiple Solutions

Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2004
All too often, a simple exercise IS dressed up with a few words, designed to look like it might interest a young student, and called “a problem.” These affectations do not make it a problem. A problem should not just force a student to decode words but must “unleash the thinking part of my brain,” one elementary school student said when describing the ...

Consider Multiple Solutions

IEEE Software, 2008
Design teams rarely consider multiple solution ideas before committing to one. They often forget that an even better idea could be just around the corner, and consider alternative ideas only when they don't like the current one. Using sketchboarding, design studio, or a combination of these two techniques can let teams quickly ideate over many ...

Burgers hierarchy: Multiple kink solutions and multiple singular kink solutions

Journal of the Franklin Institute, 2010
Abstract The Burgers’ hierarchy is investigated. Hirota's bilinear method is employed for a reliable treatment of this hierarchy. Multiple kink solutions and multiple singular kink solutions are formally derived for Burgers’ hierarchy.

Single Solution, Multiple Perspectives [PDF]

open access: possible, 2009
This article reviews a model-eliciting activity, with a single-numerical answer, implemented in a calculus class at the university level. A closer look at students’ solutions reveals multiple perspectives in solving the problem, perspectives that present students’ conceptual and representational systems.
