Astrophysics and Space Science, 1994From the growing observational evidence that binary/multiple star formation occurs prior to the pre-main sequence (Mathieu, 1992), it is clear that any theory of star formation MUST also explain binary formation. In this thesis, I present a study of the formation and evolution of stars, particularly multiple stellar systems. Binary stars provide a key constraint on star formation because any successful model should reproduce the mass-dependent frequency, distribution of separations, and distribution of mass ratios.

2012The previous chapter formulated the characteristics of the formation of single young stars not taking in account effects of fragmentation. That fragmention in critical stages when seed stars form is likely to occur throughout the Galaxy. This implies that the vast majority of protostars and PMS stars are found in multiple systems.
