Binary and Multiple Star Formation

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1994
From the growing observational evidence that binary/multiple star formation occurs prior to the pre-main sequence (Mathieu, 1992), it is clear that any theory of star formation MUST also explain binary formation. This paper details two formation mechanisms for binary/multiple stars, which occur simultaneously with protostar formation.

Multiple star formation

2023
It has been shown that the vast proportion of stars are not alone, with ~40% of stars comparable in mass to our Sun (e.g. Raghavan+ 2010) and ~90% of the most massive stars (e.g. Sana+ 2012) existing in at least a binary system. This multiplicity has the potential to vastly change a star's life should it interact with a companion, but despite its ...

Multiple Star Formation

2010
In this thesis, I present a study of the formation and evolution of stars, particularly multiple stellar systems. Binary stars provide a key constraint on star formation because any successful model should reproduce the mass-dependent frequency, distribution of separations, and distribution of mass ratios.

Multiple Stars and Planets

2012
This is the process by which basic material such as gas and dust becomes a gravitating, self-luminous object. This is a complex process involving physics and chemistry, gravitation, rotation, magnetic fields and turbulence, and temperature, density and scale.

Double and Multiple Stars

1988
In the recent years new techniques are expanding visual binary star astronomy into previously inaccessible regimes of angular resolution and accuracy of measurements regarding the astrometric and astrophysical parameters of their components. New techniques and algorithms are providing enhanced sensitivity to low mass companions and the determination of

Double and Multiple Stars

1928
To interpret astronomical phenomena in the realm of double and multiple stars, is to disclose a series of startling discoveries and point the way to further revelation, all having a tremendous significance in general physics, mathematics and philosophy as well.

Double and Multiple Stars

1985
Commission 26 has changed its name. The new denomination, warmly promoted by Dommanget, represents more adequately the actual field of the Commission itself and appears as a good start for extending its interest beyond the traditional aspects (morphology and statistics) and plunging into problems connected with the origin, evolution, mass spectrum and ...

Double and Multiple Stars

1994
The nature of research on double and multiple stars has changed drastically during the past several decades. Prior to then the research was mostly concerned with visual measures for the purposes of obtaining orbital elements and masses. Then came spectroscopic studies that (1) when combined with the visual orbital elements allowed the determination of ...

Multiplicity in Star Formation

2012
The previous chapter formulated the characteristics of the formation of single young stars not taking in account effects of fragmentation. That fragmention in critical stages when seed stars form is likely to occur throughout the Galaxy. This implies that the vast majority of protostars and PMS stars are found in multiple systems.
