The observational study of double and multiple stars is traditionally seen as comprised of several specialized subfields, each defined by particular observational selection effects. Improvements in increased precision and accuracy, higher resolution, higher signal-to-noise ratios, greater sensitivity etc.), are leading the study of double stars to a ...

The Formation of Multiple Stars
2007We have undertaken a series of SPH hydrodynamic + N-body simulations in order to explore the multiplicity properties of young stars. We find that binary and multiple stars are a natural outcome of collapsing turbulent flows, with a high incidence of N > 2 systems, specially among the higher mass objects.

The nature of research on double and multiple stars has changed drastically during the past several decades. Prior to then the research was mostly concerned with visual measures for the purposes of obtaining orbital elements and masses. Then came spectroscopic studies that (1) when combined with the visual orbital elements allowed the determination of ...

In this thesis, I present a study of the formation and evolution of stars, particularly multiple stellar systems. Binary stars provide a key constraint on star formation because any successful model should reproduce the mass-dependent frequency, distribution of separations, and distribution of mass ratios.

Current Work on Binary and Multiple Stars
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1985Following the kind invitation of Prof. Kopal, I am going to refer at this Conference on current work carried out by the IAU Commission 26, after having circulated a letter to all members to collect recent information at various places. I am grateful to those who replied in time for this report, which will also contain some personal considerations.
