Focus intervention effects in Mandarin multiple wh-questions

Journal of East Asian Linguistics, 2015
In this paper, we investigate focus intervention effects in Mandarin multiple wh-questions, showing that such effects arise only if a focus particle and its focus associate intervene between the interrogative complementizer C[Q] and one or more in-situ wh-phrases.

Multiple wh-questions

2019
I present a new syntactic analysis for multiple wh-constructions. Adopting Richards 1997, I assume that there are two types of languages concerning wh-movement: Such which A-move their wh-words (A-languages) and such which A’-move them (A’-languages). I expand Richard’s account by assuming that in both types, wh-movement targets the CP.

Multiple Wh-questions and the cleft construction in Malayalam

2013
Wh-questions in Malayalam are usually clefts, with the wh-phrase occupying the cleft focus. An alternative to clefting the wh-element is to cleft the whole clause containing the wh. When there are multiple wh-phrases in the embedded clause, however, the only option is to cleft the embedded clause wholesale.

Case Study II: Multiple Wh-Questions in Japanese

2016
This chapter is a further illustration of how Quantifier Raising (QR) is constrained by minimal Search and Minimize chain links (MCL) applied to Float. It is argued that the so-called pair-list reading of a multiple wh-question in Japanese is derived from an LF representation in which the lower wh-phrase is covertly merged with the higher one.

Question-answer exemplars were selected within each class, and each class was trained separately in consecutive ...

The Freezing Principle in Hungarian polarity, non-polarity and multiple wh-questions

2013
This paper explores how weak erotetic vajon ‘whether, if…at all’ interacts with the interrogative clitic -e ‘QCL’ in polarity questions and with wh-words in non-polarity and multiple wh-questions in Hungarian. Vajon ‘if…at all’, sitting in ForceP, forms an expletive–associate chain with FINP, which hosts the polarity interrogative clitic -e ‘QCL ...
