Functionalizing Micro‐to‐Mesoscopic Electrode Architectures for Regulating Electron Transfer Behaviors in Electrocatalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A systematic review is conducted to assess the influence of electrode architecture across micro‐ to mesoscopic length scales on electron‐transfer pathways in electrocatalysis. We discuss the structure‐activity relationships in electrocatalytic applications, including resource recovery and environmental remediation, and provide cost‐effective, efficient

FEM-DEM Multiscale Numerical Method for Investigating Stress Gradient Effects in Granular Media

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The gravitational field represents the fundamental stress field in geotechnical engineering. Its influence on soil mechanical behavior is manifested not only through variations in stress magnitude but also through stress gradient effects.

A multi-scale computational framework for the hygro-thermo-mechanical analysis of laminated composite structures with carbon nanotube inclusions

open access: yesResults in Engineering, 2023
In this work, a multi-scale framework is presented for the estimation of the hygro-thermo-mechanical elastic performance of laminated composite structures with single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) inclusions.

Adjoint-Based Adaptive Convergence Control of the Iterative Finite Volume Multiscale Method

open access: yesSPE Reservoir Simulation Conference, 2019
Abstract We propose a novel adaptive, adjoint-based, iterative multiscale finite volume (i-MSFV) method. The method aims to reduce the computational cost of the smoothing stage of the original i-MSFV method by selectively choosing fine-scale sub-domains (or sub-set of primary variables) to solve for.

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Multiscale homogenization of aluminum honeycomb structures: Thermal analysis with orthotropic representative volume element and finite element method

open access: yesHeliyon
This study develops a thermal homogenization model for an aluminum honeycomb panel using the representative volume element (RVE) concept, considering the orthotropic nature of the structure.

HIERARCHICAL RVE-BASED MULTISCALE MODELING OF NONLINEAR HETEROGENEOUS MATERIALS USING THE FINITE VOLUME METHOD

open access: yesInternational Journal for Multiscale Computational Engineering, 2022
This paper describes the development of a hierarchical multiscale procedure within the finite volume (FL) OpenFOAM framework for modeling the mechanical response of nonlinear heterogeneous solid materials. This is a first development of the hierarchical multiscale model for solid mechanics using the FL discretization method.

Gradient‐Conductivity Architecture Enables Synchronous Enhancement of Sensitivity and Detection Range in Multifunctional All‐Paper Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A gradient‐engineered all‐paper sensor is fabricated by integrating MXene and in situ grown AgNPs within hierarchical cellulose networks. The device breaks the sensitivity–detection range trade‐off through cascaded conductive pathways, enabling ultrahigh pressure sensitivity, humidity–pressure decoupled dual‐mode sensing, and outstanding EMI shielding,

High-order multiscale finite element method for elliptic problems [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper, a new high-order multiscale finite element method is developed for elliptic problems with highly oscillating coefficients. The method is inspired by the multiscale finite element method developed in [3], but a more explicit multiscale ...
